XboxOne asks for update, won't connect to controller not xbox console app

I haven't used my xbox one for a while. Today I turned it on and realized it won't connect to the controller (controller blinks, stops blinking and then immediately shuts down) even using the usb cable. The controller seems to work as I can connect it to my laptop using the xbox accessories app.

I tried connecting to the xbox using xbox app in my laptop but the laptop can't find it.

All I see in the Xbox is a "Let's update" message asking to start a 686MB update, but I have no way to click the "start update" button.

Press and hold your console's power button until it turns off and remove the power cord for about 2 minutes.

Turn off your controller and remove the batteries for 2 minutes.

Then plug the power cord back into your console and try powering it on using the controller and see if that solves the problem.

Unfortunately this didn't work. The controller does not turn on the console, and if I directly turn on the console and then the controller, the controller seems to shut down as soon as the light stops blinking.

you won't be able to connect the surface pro to the console via hdmi or usb and use it as a screen for the Xbox One console, since the surface won't have a video-in connection.

What you can do is to set the console to allow streaming towards a different device via the Xbox App, see this link with information and details how to set that up:

That will allow you to use the console via the surface screen, but in order to set up the console etc. it will require a screen to be connected.

Same issue. I updated Windows 10 (a big update). Then, my controller had an update available (it wasn't available before the big Windows update). I rebooted and it is still asking for a passcode and won't connect regardless of what I do. The whole reason
I got the Xbox One S controller was for PC and "play anywhere" titles. Seems that there's still a lot of bugs to work out. DS4 at least works with 3rd party apps.
