We understand that you are experiencing an issue with your Xbox 360 controller drivers. Let us look into this together to get you back to gaming.

First, we do recommend that you upgrade your equipment to the new Xbox One controller and Wireless Receiver for Windows 10. If you choose to not do this, we can provide some technical workarounds found by the community that may solve this issue for you.

Locate the malfunctioning driver

1. Open your File Explorer and navigate to “This PC”
   
2. Right-click “This PC” and select “Manage”
   
3. From the list on the left, select “Device Manager”
   
4. From the center panel, locate the Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver driver
   
   Note: It may be listed under “Other devices” or as an “Unknown Device”
   
5. Right-click the device and select “Properties” and then select the “Details” tab
   
6. In the first dropdown selection box, select “Hardware ids”
   
7. In the Value box, you will see the full IDs needed to proceed with the next steps
   
   Example: USB\VID_045E&PID_0291
   
8. Please write down the last 4 numbers from the second value line to ensure you remember it
   
   Example: 0291
   

Download the Xbox 360 Controller Driver

The Microsoft website has removed the direct link to the official Xbox 360 controller driver download. We recommend that you search for the Xbox 360 Controller driver using your own methods.

Extract Driver

1. After downloading the driver folder, open the file
   
2. Locate the executable within the driver folder. Right-click the .exe and extract that file to the file location by selecting “Extract Here”
   
3. Then, in that file select “xbox360” > “setup64” > “files” > “driver” > “win7”
   
4. From here, there will be a file ending in .inf
   
   Example: xusb21.inf
   
5. Right-click the .inf file and open using the “Notepad” application
   

Edit Driver System Information file

1. When the .inf file is open in “Notepad”, please navigate to the “Wireless Common Controller” text
   
2. To the right of that device name will be a familiar looking string of ID information. Please replace the last four of the numbers from the Wireless Common Controller ID with the four numbers you saved earlier from your device. You can do this by highlighting the existing 4 digits, navigating to “Edit” > “Replace…” and replace the data
   
   Example: USB\VID_045E&PID_0719 > USB\VID_045E&PID_0291
   
3. Save the “Notepad” file. Now the driver file is ready to be installed
   

Change Windows to “Test Mode”

1. Go to your “Start” Menu by selecting the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your screen
   
2. Type “cmd” and then “Run as administrator” to open the Command Prompt application
   
3. Enter the command below to enter Test Mode
   
   bcdedit /set testsigning on
   
4. Press “Enter” on your computer to run the command
   
5. Close out of Command Prompt and restart your computer
   
6. After restarting, you should notice an icon in the bottom right corner of your screen saying “Test Mode”
   

Install edited driver file and confirm installation

1. Locate the driver file ending in .inf that was edited earlier
   
2. Right-click the file and select “Install” and then “Install this driver software anyway”
   
3. Open Device Manager to confirm that the driver installation was successful. The driver should appear as “Xbox 360 Peripherals”
   

Turn off Windows “Test Mode”

1. Go to your “Start” Menu by selecting the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your screen
   
2. Type “cmd” and then “Run as administrator” to open the Command Prompt application
   
3. Enter the command below to enter Test Mode
   
   bcdedit /set testsigning off
   
4. Press “Enter” on your computer to run the command
   
5. Close out of Command Prompt and restart your computer
   
6. After restarting, the icon displaying “Test Mode” that we saw earlier should be gone
