Xbox Wireless Controller Driver Code 39

I have had my Xbox One Wireless Controller for many months without issue, until recently it stopped working with my PC games.

In Device Manager, there is an error on the Xbox One Wireless Controller which reads:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Object Name not found."

There is no error on the Xbox Wireless Adaptor.

The driver error persists despite;

Plugging the controller in through a USB cable

Using a different Xbox controller

Attempting to update the controller via the Xbox Accessories app on the Xbox One (it already had the latest version)

Uninstalling and re-installing the device

I have tried searching for help on these forums and elsewhere and have found very little related to my problem, hence why I am posting this thread.

Okay, here's what I've found:

Both controllers
do not work on the desktop PC with either a wired or wireless connection.

The primary controller however (didn't try both),
does work on my laptop (same OS build) with both a wired and wireless connection.

This would suggest it is a problem with my desktop PC despite having the same OS as my laptop.

Assuming other devices work on your main PC such as Mice, keyboards, external drives etc, then this leans towards a fault with your windows install. You can try these two options:

Perform a clean boot of Windows:

Reset Windows 10 - Keeping all of your files and apps:

Third option:

Complete reinstall Windows 10

Failing that, there is a third option. May sound a little more drastic, but if it is indeed a Windows issue (and I'm heavily inclined to believe it is), then a re-install of Windows 10 may be the only way to fix this issue.

If you do have to resort to this option, you'll need to first back up all of your files, or move them another drive on your PC. The complete re-install of Windows 10 will remove everything from your PC.

I can advise on this later, please try the above suggestions first.

You're going to have to test another controller, or test your controller in another computer or laptop. If the controller doesn't work on a different computer, then it's the controller that's faulty.

Try another known working controller in your PC. If it works on something else, but not your PC, then the issue is with your OS. Check if other hardware like a USB Flash drive works in the same USB port.

Unfortunately I don't own any other types of controller so I can't test this.

Do you have any controllers that are not xbox one wireless ones? such as wired x360 or unbranded? if so could you try one of those? maybe there is an issue with particular combination
