Xbox Wireless Controller Acting as Mouse and Keyboard in Windows

    Hi,

I received an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller recently and connected it to my gaming laptop first via bluetooth then via usb cable to set up the Xbox Accessories app.

The issue i'm having is that certain inputs on the controller seem to correspond to keyobard or mouse actions

    • Holding up on the left stick and pressing A will increase the volume by 2
    • Holding down and pressing A decreases it
    • Holding in any direction on the right stick and pressing A moves the mouse very quickly in that direction

I'm sure there are others I'm missing. Pressing X in games quickly switches the key displays to keyboard so I'm sure thats mapped to a key too.

It appears in device manager that I now have a new HID keyboard device under keyboards

I'm not using any special key setups for the controller im on default setup.

Does anyone know how to prevent this or, if this is some intentional setup in windows, how to turn it off?

    Ryan

    :)

    Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your reply. We are glad to hear that your issue has been fixed with your Elite controller. As for your HID keyboard driver if it is not causing you anymore harm, I would not worry about it.

Turns out a lot of this is Steam specific

However removing any Steam related profiles does not fix some fundamental issues with the way windows is dealing with this controller

    1. The controller is acting as a keyboard in windows
    2. The buttons on the controller seem to be mapped to either mouse clicks or key presses
In games this means pressing A for example will perform the A button press but also register a keyboard or mouse action resulting in all the icons changing to keyboard until I move an analogue stick

Disabling the HID Keyboard device does nothing

Disabling the bluetooth XINPUT device stops the controller from working as a controller anymore

Xbox Wireless Controller Acting as Mouse and Keyboard in Windows

    Hi,

I managed to fix this just recently

It appears to be an issue with the way the windows apps interact and update.

I had recently installed the xbox accessories app from the microsoft store but it never told me it needed a firmware update when connecting the controller.

What fixed it was using the store to update the MS store app, then deleting and reinstalling the xbox accessories app.

After that when I connected the accessories app told me of an update and the screen with the 3 dots looked different generally, like I had a more recent version of the accessories app, although I can't be certain.

What hasn't been "fixed" though is the installing of the HID keyboard device with an inactive or not working driver.

I've ignored that now as it doesn't seem to be doing any harm but I do wonder why that's appearing at all

    Hi Ryan,

Thanks for reaching out to the forums! We are sorry to hear about your issue and would like to help out. You mentioned that you have installed the Xbox accessories app on your pc. When you did this did you also update the Elite controller as well? If you have updated the controller, can I ask if you have reset the controller mapping in the Xbox accessories app to get your controller back to default settings?

Odd behavior of Xbox 360 wireless controller on Windows 10

Can you try installing the xbox 360 drivers located here?
    https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-au/d/xbox-360-controller-for-windows

If you have windows 10 64 bit please choose the windows 7 64 bit version as that's compatible.
Tested, no luck. Still behaving like a mouse ...

Do you have steam installed? If so, please see this page to turn off that program's feature to have xbox controllers act as mouse and keyboard:
