    Xbox wireless adaptor Code 10

Hello, I have a new style wireless adaptor to connect an Xbox pad to the PC. It used to work.

Then it worked intermittently, where it would work for a bit, then say the drivers had failed, but uninstalling it and re-installing it would make it work for a while.

Now as soon as we plug it in, it says 'this device cannot start. Code 10'.
I've bought new USB cables in case it was a malfunctioning extension cable. I've bought the old style Xbox wireless adaptor and it's the same.

I've tried different drivers, I've tried all kinds of things.
It seems from a search that this problem has been known about for several years and yet there's still no proper fix for it.
What options do I have left, other than smashing it with a hammer?

    Cheers.

    :)

I've tried it in every USB socket both on and around the PC, with different cables, with different hubs, with different connectors.

The best result comes from when it's plugged into a 10m extension cable with a non brand, four port hub plugged into it. If I plug it into a named brand hub, it absolutely refuses to even get to the part where it pretends to work for a bit.

I've tried updating the driver. It says I have the best driver already. I've tried following several guides by people who also have the same problem, and downloaded pretty much every driver Microsoft has ever made and tried them. None of them work.

I've uninstalled it and re-installed it a thousand times by now. I don't think doing it one more time is going to magically make it work.

I've tried the troubleshooter. It couldnt troubleshoot its way out of a wet paper bag.

I'll try the System File Checker tomorrow, in the vain hope that something might work. Spoiler Alert: It will not

    Hello FLIB1,

Thank you for posting your question in Microsoft Community.

I can see that you are having trouble with the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10, which is showing a code 10 error in Device Manager. This error means that the device cannot start properly, and it could be caused by various factors, such as driver issues, hardware conflicts, or corrupted system files.

There are some possible solutions that you can try to fix this problem. Here are some steps that you can follow:

    - Unplug the adapter from your computer and plug it into a different USB port. Sometimes, changing the port can resolve the issue.

    - Update the driver for the adapter. You can do this by going to Device Manager, right-clicking on the adapter, and selecting Update driver. Then, choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the instructions.

    - Uninstall and reinstall the adapter. You can do this by going to Device Manager, right-clicking on the adapter, and selecting Uninstall device. Then, restart your computer and plug in the adapter again. Windows should detect it and install it automatically.

    - Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. You can do this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Hardware and Devices. Then, click Run the troubleshooter and follow the instructions.

    - Perform a System File Checker scan. This is a tool that can repair corrupted system files that may affect the device functionality. You can do this by opening Command Prompt as an administrator and typing sfc /scannow and pressing Enter. Wait for the scan to complete and then restart your computer.
