Xbox Windows App game streaming issue: blurry, pixelated and laggy (completely unplayable)...

As the title says - Xbox Windows app, cloud gaming/game streaming is blurry, pixelated and very laggy. Looks like a slow waterfall of pixels at a very slow screen refresh rate (screenshot incldued). This happens when my laptop/PC is connected to my router's WIFI.

Interestingly enough, I've tried connecting to a 4G mobile phone tethered connection - the game streaming works fine (apart from some artifacts you'd normally expect to experience when using a slow connection).

    Thins I've tried:

Updated Windows, all apps (related to Xbox), disabled firewall (Avast), changed DNS settings, tried different settings for WiFi - still no luck. The app seems to work fine when on 4G phone's connection but is completely unplayable when using broadband/WiFi connection. My ISP is Vodafone, UK, 75Mbps line, 18Mbps upload.

Browser via Chrome works fine, however there's no controlelr vibration/rumble support.

In comparison, my Stadia works absolutely fine too.

Has anyone experienced the same issue? Did you manage to fix it and if yes, how?

Thansk for everyone's help in advance.

Including a screenshot of what the game screen looks like when the game is loaded on WIFI:

Xbox Windows App game streaming issue: blurry, pixelated and laggy (completely unplayable) using broadband connection; works fine on 4G mobile tethered connection

I've been having the same issue ever since joining Vodafone broadband, it worked great when I had ee broadband. I have found doing it via the browser on my phone works best but I'm trying to use it on my Xbox now, but you can't use a Vpn or a browser there. Did anyone find any solutions?

Xbox Windows App game streaming issue: blurry, pixelated and laggy (completely unplayable) using broadband connection; works fine on 4G mobile tethered connection

    Hello Anthony,

thank you for all these details.

I have exactly the same issue while trying to use xbox cloud directly on the console or with the xbox app. Works fine with a browser or if I share the 4G connection with my smartphone instead of using my ISP.

It makes me wonder if it could be related to the fact that while being connected to my ISP, my xbox or computer has an IPV6 address.

When using VPN or shared connection it is an IPV4 address.

Xbox Windows App game streaming issue: blurry, pixelated and laggy (completely unplayable) using broadband connection; works fine on 4G mobile tethered connection

Yes, Yes, I have the exact same issue.

My ISP is also Vodafone, around 42Mbps down, 10Mbps up.

My PC is actually wired as I have CAT5 cabling in my house, so I can even rule out WiFi. But I also get same issue on my mobile via WiFi and even on cloud stream direct from Xbox (CAT5 cabled). So that rules out local network connection and it being down to a particular device.

Also as you have found, if I use the browser version of cloud streaming it works fine, it's only using the Xbox App either on PC / Mobile / Xbox that has the issue.

So you'd think that would mean its the Xbox app.

However, I have found a workaround based on comments I've seen on other threads, and that is using a VPN. If I use my NordVPN connection and connect to UK VPN, I still have issue, but if I connect to Ireland or US, it works fine. I can even switch between no VPN and different VPN connections while cloud streaming is running and as soon as I switch from no VPN to Ireland VPN, it auto reconnects and its all good again.

I was wondering if it had something to do with Vodafone, especially seeing you are also on Vodafone. But I've visited parents house, also on Vodafone, and used my mobile on WiFi and it worked fine.

I guess it could still be related to Vodafone as we may connect to different parts of Vodafone network.

    So in summary: -

    It's blocky/laggy: -

On PC, hard wired, Xbox App, No VPN.

On PC, hard wired, Xbox App, VPN to UK.

On Mobile, WiFi, Xbox App, No VPN.

On Xbox, hard wired, Xbox App, No VPN.

    It works fine: -

On PC, hard wired, Chrome Browser, No VPN.

On PC, hard wired, Xbox App, VPN to Ireland or US.

On Mobile, WiFi, Xbox App, VPN to Ireland or US.

Hi Chris, I appreciate the response but it doesn’t really help me or anyone else - no useful information which would help to solve the issue.

    - It’s a PC, not a device, so not going to “hard reset” anything

    - If Chrome delivered the same experience as the app (if it was fully functional) - I’d use Chrome. It doesn’t, as my post mentions - there is no rumble support. Not really good value for anyone paying full subscription price and getting limited functionality, is it?

P.S. Not really an xbox fan, just trying out a paid service which doesn’t work as described.

It’d be great to get answers which actually help to solve the problem and are on point, hope that makes sense.

Hi there Alex welcome to the community forum! Christopher here, an Xbox fan just like you and has been on Xbox for years already. I would really love to make your day by helping you out. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of users are experiencing this issue while using the feature, I had the same issue and decided to switch to Chrome (I prefer not rumbling than having my game all pixilated lol) there's no official fix to this, some users claim that factory reseting the device completely fixed the issue, some didn't run so lucky! I have tons of data on my phone so it's a no no for me, please let me know if it works for you!
