Xbox Username Suffix

I see that there are numbers at the end of my account username. I'm aware that they get added when someone else has the name, but when I search up the name, it says 3 other people have it. Their names are related to mine, but they have spaces. Does this
mean we have the same username? If not, why would my account have the suffix numbers if no one has the name I want? Thank you!

Yes, all of you have the same username. The system doesn't see things like spaces as making a gamertag unique. So it sees "gamertag" as being the same as "gamer tag".

That's a strange one....if I search for the username you want, then it shows without a suffix of numbers. Yet, if I search for usernames I know are in use, then it always adds a suffix

No. The numbers are part of the Gamertag and serve to differentiate you from the person who first created the Gamertag and will also be used for other users to add you.

The numbers will show as part of the gamertag in areas that aren't updated to work with the new policy. The only way to avoid that and not have a suffix at all is to choose a gamertag that no one else has.
