So if you bought the code because it's cheaper it's not practical to do this every time

sounds like the console is from a different region and he sold it to you in your region (or he bought it from another region to his then sold it from his to yours). if that is the case there is no way to make games that are non compatible with that system
to play.

Changing your region to Japan doesn't make your console a Japanese console.
