Xbox Series X won’t recognize external hard drive after latest update

    Hi everyone,

After the latest update on my Xbox Series X, I've encountered an issue where the console no longer recognizes my external hard drive. Before the update, everything was working perfectly fine. Now, even after multiple reboots, the drive isn't showing up in the storage settings.

I've tried using different USB ports and cables to rule out a hardware problem, but the issue persists. The external hard drive works flawlessly on my PC, so it's definitely an Xbox compatibility issue.

Has anyone else experienced this problem after the recent update? Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

    Hi Jeffrey,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Xbox Community. I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your external HDD. To isolate your issue, can you please confirm if your drive is being detected? Open the guide, select Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage.

If it's not showing, please remove the storage and perform a power cycle to restart your power supply and clear the cache of your console. kindly follow the steps below.

    1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds. The console will turn off.

    2. Unplug the console's power cable. Wait 50 seconds.

Important: Make sure that you wait at least 50 seconds. This step resets the power supply.

    3. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller.

If you don't see the green boot-up animation when the console restarts, repeat these steps. Make sure that you hold the power button until the console completely shuts down.

Important If your console is in Sleep mode, the above steps will shut the console off completely. Sleep mode, or the ability to turn on your console by saying "Xbox on," won't be enabled until you restart the console.

Once booted up, reinsert your storage device and try again.

    Regards,

    Alvaro

Pre download Xbox Series X games

    Not really...

Xbox Series X games / upgrades / updates has to be installed onto the Series X internal or expansion card SSD,

You can have Xbox One games on your external hard drive that will get an Series X upgrade but the games will need to be transferred to the Series X and then the Series X upgrade will need to be downloaded onto the Series X SSD,

    As an example...

I have Marvel Avengers on my external hard drive that will get the Series X upgrade and I will transfer the game over to the Series X SSD ready to download and update the game to the Series X version when available.

Can you transport Xbox 360 / One games on a Harddrive of some sort on a Series X?

If you have an Xbox One with an external USB 3.0 hard drive connected to it with games installed on it. Then just disconnect the drive from the Xbox One, and connect it to the Series X, the drive should be recognized, and you should be able to play the games without having to install them.
