Xbox Series X Seagate 2TB SSD connection weak

    Good morning,

I was getting on the Xbox last night (Thursday, June 27th) and I thought everything was fine until I went to launch a game but it failed to launch. The same thing with every other one I tried. Nothing was downloading from the Microsoft store either.

I checked all my connections, reset my console to factory defaults but the issue persisted. When I checked the USB connections (I have a headset, a Seagate made for Xbox HDD, and a Seagate made for Xbox SSD), I found that when I reset the SSD connection that it gave me an error code saying the USB connection was too weak to use. As soon as I unplugged it, everything was working normally again, apps loaded and updated and games could be played normally again.

I tried to plug it back into a different USB inlet and got the same thing, and the same Xbox behavior. The SSD was working just fine the night before (Wednesday, June 26th).

The SSD when plugged in shows that I have a little over half the space taken up, which was what it showed before but viewing the contents nets nothing in the browser. It shows the drive is empty. It will not respond to any type of formatting either.

    :)

Yes when you add the card there is not enough power on the bus.

The USB 3.0 spec has not changed. It's one of the big things with USB C

The fact thst is bottoms out with the card points diectly to power. Platter drives are very hungry

    Hey Onyx,

    Still working the problem.

The SSD seems to be reformated now and working somewhat properly.

I plugged it into the Xbox and this is what it gave me this time.

Below you'll see me trying to reformat it for use with Xbox games but it does not give me the option and it doesn't recognize it as being USB 3.0.

I'm going to try to do a quick reformat of the drive into exFat from NTFS.

    Update:

I tried to load up the SSD in the Xbox as well as the PC and it did not show up while formated as exFat but recognized a USB drive was connected.

But it has nothing to do with the HDD platter drive.

During my troubleshooting, I had disconnected all of the other USB inputs and tried them one at a time until I came to the conclusion that the SSD was the culprit that froze up the whole xbox, wouldn't allow me to launch games or apps, I couldn't update anything for some reason and throwing me the error code of a weak connection.

None of the other USB inputs gave the same error weak connection error. I was able to launch every game I tried while the SSD was disconnected.

As soon as I plugged the SSD back in everything stopped working and the update downloads stopped.

This issue with the SSD just sprung up Thursday. Before that all the USB inputs were working as advertised with no issues of lack of power or compromised data streams.

I do not think its a power issue.

Great. I've run into this issue with my Seagate in the past and have some info on reformatting if it proves difficult on the PC. Please see the info below.

You can read the article on how to do the reset via this link https://www.gottabemobile.com/how-to-fix-your-h...

If you need to reformat your external hard drive on the PC please follow the steps below to have the PC recognize the drive.

    1. On the PC go to the Start Menu and type Disk Management in the search bar then press enter. If any pop up come up just click Cancel
    2. Search for the drive on the list. It should have a red arrow next to it and say that it's not initialized
    3. Select Initialize in the pop up menu. Don't change any info on the next menu
    4. Right click on the drive and select New Simple Volume
    5. Click next on all screens until you see Finish. Click it

From here you should have a notification that you've connected a new hard drive. You can now find it in the PC folder, right click on it and select Format. I would recommend unchecking the option for the fast format and let it do a full one.

One final note. If you do not see an option to Initialize the disc right click on the drive and select Convert to MBR. Others have luck in selecting this option to have the disc be read by the console without reformatting it.

    Onyx,

I am working on Formatting the drive right now. I forgot how long it takes to do a Full format! I'm going out of town in a little while, so I am going to be leaving this to format probably over the weekend. Thank you for taking the time to help me figure this out!
