  1. XBOX Series X network adapter possible either due to Failure or bandwidth capping....

Hi, I have already completed a gauntlet of troubleshooting, and I have isolated the issue to the XBOX Series X. As I read in other places I am able to see that users mostly are able to get close to there Bandwidth as I have seen in several articles and forums alot of folks are not having the same issue as I am. I posted a previous Question regarding this and listed all of the trouble shooting steps I have completed and it seemed like the 2 or three people that answered were either saying XBOX caps a few Gamers but not everyone. Some did not read the troubleshooting steps I did and posted a redundancy.

So Before I warranty the Series X Can anyone please help me understand why My DL and UL are nearly exactly 250/250, when the prior XBOX one X and my computer when wired were getting 700-750/500-600 and 985/1020 respectively and consistently? Also, (not in my initial trouble shoot) have since tried a cat 5 a Cat 6e a Cat 7 and a Cat8 and still I am only getting Bandwidth to my PC. I doubt it is a NIC failure because it would be much more inconsistent, but I guess it is possible. Tested Seattle on 3 different servers with Ookla in edge (not xbox live) and my Xbox was giving me 250/250. My PC to the same server was exceeding 750/750.

So Prior to me warrantying this out which I really really dont want to do as it is as the down time is really inconvenient !! (got this for the family over the holidays, my son will be very dissappointed). Can anyone help me take a closer look into this? I just want the XBOX to perform within its specs and I think I am being Capped by XBOX servers when I got the series X Where others seem not to be.

    Thank you.

    :)

XBOX Series X network adapter possible either due to Failure or bandwidth capping. Potential Warranty Claim.

    Hi Udder Discharge,

Regarding contacting your ISP, you can always have them run a network test and explain to them that one of your devices is not performing at the projected speed you have had in the past. As someone who has a Gigabit connection at home, speeds fluctuate depending on the time of day or how many devices are used in my house. But every household is different, and I cannot compare my connection experience to yours. As for resetting your console and reinstalling the OS is testing out and seeing if something might be causing this software-based. This is us working together to see what suggested solution will resolve your issue. Despite consoles being new, sometimes we can get a console that may fail. For peace of mind, should you send it in for an exchange? That is up to you. If the next console comes and you get the same speeds, it's something else. Also, I found this in our support articles, and this can help if you decide to contact your ISP to Troubleshoot your network connection speed review steps 1-3. I wish I had a more definitive answer to this network anomaly, but you can hopefully find that definitive solution if you try these things.

I hope these suggestions help! If this answers your question, please mark the thread as "Answered."

    JoannaDark,

thank you since we isolated the issue to the Xbox and a cap or limitation on only that one device in my home, I realize you mentioned that Xbox does not cap but the ISP might... How do I approach the situation when only one device is capped by my ISP?
Also I have my DNS set to Cloudfare, I tried Google DNS, but I found this site based on my ISP and learned that the Cloudfare 1.1.1.1 Benched my DNS as the fastest. It is called DNSBench. IT only made marginal improvements in the upload. If I take the ethernet out of my XBOX and put it in my PC my speed to the same Seattle Server, Ookla pinged me with 47ms, and 790/820. Back to the xbox to do the same thing to the same server in Edge 250/250.. If I ping locally to my city in Edge on the xbox I get 300/300 ping 6ms, yet with that same ehternet cable My PC yields 985/1020 ping 4ms.

This Xbox came out of the box 1 month ago (it is NEW) with this bandwidth so If there was a failure it happened prior to me getting it.. You mentioned that the route I should take in the first post indicates: " Reset and remove everything" within the same post or reply in another you say I could also choose to keep my games and apps.

I have done the latter 3 times, I have not reset and remove everything yet., However If I am only keeping games and apps do you believe that "removing everything " is going to mean much with the OS and restoring or getting approximated Bandwidth as I was getting on the XBOX one X of 780/550? (nothing in my network changed except the Xbox). I have also reset the router twice to factory.

I am having issue with Microsoft willingness to warranty it I have tried 2 times and Both interactions with the Agents in Mumbai said Xbox series X is actively capped, but I see no references to this on the WWW. It Almost feels like I have the same notation from a prior call for the second call to mention the same thing. I am unable to just return it due to the subscription to All Access.

I also Do not think it is failed because if It was a network adapter issue I do believe my speeds and pings would be wildly erratic on subsequent testing but I am getting the nearly same exact ping and the same nearly exact speed on 3 times daily NetStats app on xbox.

    Thanks

And this may sound dumb given that I do have limited to moderate network experience I do not know if I know how to figure out if I am on a open DNs.

At this point I am willing to try different DNS on the XBOX as my problem is limited to Only the XBOX.

Microsoft in my experience caps everyone at 250mbps, which would allow you to download a 100GB game in an hour. When you’re running a huge network, you need to make sure a single user isn’t a disproportionate drain on resources. It’s far more bandwidth than anyone playing games needs, and completely adequate to load most games quickly. Some smaller games, or even individual files like when you update Microsoft Flight Simulator will be capped at lower bandwidth as they will update quickly regardless.
SwordofWhedon, while this may be your personal experience it is not indicative of everyone. There are very limited info on the web regarding my issue especially of those with Gig. In fact much of what I am reading are of people complaining to not get EXACTLY their DL and UL speed as per provider which is to be expected. There are also alot of points within these forums of users getting 600-800 on Gig. We also have to weigh in the percentage of users that have Gig vs 200-400mbps, I bet it is heavily weighted in the latter because 1: If I were to underestimate I would say 80% of users have this type of plan or less. 2: Folks with this plan are more likely not to notice or have the understanding that they will not get this full speed of 200 to 400.

Also, your opinion about "how much we need" is completely irrelevant to this post. I am sure you're trying to help but "how much a single person or a family needs" bears absolutely 0 relevance and completely off topic to the question at hand. To Reiterate: I am under the belief that some mechanic or software in my (and possibly others) XBOX Lost the network lottery as their are multiple users with Gig that are able to reap the benefits of that connection on Their Xbox's. My prior Xbox one X the day I changed them dropped from 780/550 to 250/250 for instance.

Here Is My List of Troubleshooting steps JoannaDark:

Service: 1 Gig down one gig up. I use Cat 8 ethernet, but have tried Cat7,Cat6e, Cat5. .

I take my PC and hardwire it directly to the Fiberjack which is Google equivilancy of a Modem. I get 985/985 consistently. So It is not Google Equipment or ISP issues. I took my router and unplugged all other ethernet ports and kept only the Internet Lan In directly from the fiberjack, My speed test to the router was 790/850. So it is not my router nor the Ethernet cable. I plugged my Xbox in directly to the ethernet cord to the router( I took the router wifi off line and used that fiberjack ethernet directly into the XBOX only got 140/250).

My wireless phone on WiFi 6 gives me 750/942 to the router, so again it is not the router. When I have my router all plugged up without engaging in these trouble steps to isolate the issue, My new Xbox Series X never achieves a speed over 250/250 which is a quarter of what I pay for and what Every other device in My home gets. I have done most trouble shooting steps in these forums. (Clear Mac), DNS 8.8.8.8 /8.8.4.4) But I have tried Cloudfare.

Nat state is always open Latency is always low (25ms). Microsoft edge browser in Xbox at multiple different speed test. and receive same to similar downstream and upstream. I have used Ookla, Fast.com, Google Fiber, Waveform Bufferbloat (Too Seattle, Not to Xbox server) . All the same. So We can rule out false positives and negatives from the Settings App (test network speed and statistics).

It appears I have ruled everything thinkable out except the XBOX series x and its NIC. Thing is I hate to warranty it if the Nic were faulty would it not be erratic and inconsistent instead of 250/250 like clock work? Whose to say I don't recieve another of these capped Xbox's when I warranty this? Before I got the Series X my Xbox one X was getting 760/500, literally between the change it severely went down.

JoannaDark, I look forward to further dialogue regarding this I have only reset console to keep games and apps. I can reset everything to default and erase everything but this is time consuming. I have a couple of questions prior to moving forward however. I will be able to move my internal storage over to an HDD, and I have an additional expansion card plugged into the back. Can I simply remove the card and plug it in when the Xbox resets itself. Also EVERY game save is in the Cloud?

I do not want to lose save files. Also if I do the reset and come back with the same bandwidth That would kind of indicate that the Nic is faulty (not probable) or there is a lottery on who gets gig on XBOX whether it be by server hinderance, user profile, or some other mechanic that Microsoft randomly decides, That I get the same limitation?

    Hi Udder Discharge,

I am happy to answer your questions. Regarding resetting the console, you have two choices, one that keeps the apps and games but refreshes the OS. The second one is the complete factory reset that puts your console back to the state it was when you purchased it. Regarding your games, you can move them over to an external HDD, and I would remove the SSD expansion card from the console if you decided to factory reset your Xbox. All of your saves are in the cloud, and the minute you log back in and open your games, they will come back. To make this process less painful, you can press the Guide Button (Xbox Logo on the middle of the controller). Then go to settings, choose the system, and select Back up & Transfer, which allows you to back up your settings. You can then run the internal network test and the other network test you perform. To address the capping of your internet connection, we do not cap your bandwidth. Some internet service providers (ISPs) control that, and I would reach out to them. I have seen other solutions that users have tried to improve their download speeds, such as

Domain Name System (DNS) settings are fundamental to every aspect of the web, guiding devices from the web domain you provide to their internet protocol (IP) addresses. DNS servers perform this translation behind the scenes, helping connect you with your desired web location.

Unless you've previously changed up your DNS settings, your Xbox One likely uses the default DNS settings offered by your internet service provider (ISP) for Xbox Live. While using these settings is perfectly viable, you may see slightly increased speeds when switching to a third-party anycast solution. Here's how to take advantage of popular third-party DNS services such as GoogleDNS and OpenDNS on your Xbox One console.

    1. Open Settings on your Xbox One.
    2. Navigate to the General tab.
    3. Select the Network settings tile.
    4. Select Advanced settings.
    5. Select DNS Settings.
    6. Select Manual to manually enter a new address.
    7. A screen will now appear to enter an address.
    • If you're using Open DNS, enter 208.67.222.222.
    • If using Google DNS, enter 8.8.8.8.
    • If using another third-party service, enter the primary address here.
    1. After confirming the primary address, you'll next be prompted to enter a secondary address.
    • If you're using Open DNS, enter 208.67.220.220.
    • If using Google DNS, enter 8.8.4.4.
    • If using another third-party service, the secondary address should go here.
If you wish to revert to your default DNS settings at any point in time, switch your DNS settings back to Automatic via the same menu.

Download speeds can vary from region to region. But, if you think your Series X is faulty, I would send it in for warranty exchange. Unfortunately, I cannot say yes or no if technology will break down in the long run as technology is unpredictable. I can only hope that this issue gets resolved for you and not run into any other problems.

I hope these suggestions help! If this answers your question, please mark the thread as "Answered."
