Xbox Series X Enhanced Games Update to Internal SSD Instead of Install Location

When receiving an update for an S|X Enhanced game, the system redownloads the entire game with the update to the internal drive instead of the location the game is installed. The game is installed on the external HDD & is also set as the default install location. Once it is done I then have 2 installs of the game.

This happened with several games until I figured out what was happening. Specifically, I can say Forza Horizon 4 Grounded, & Gears 5. There were others, but I did not note the names. It is also worth noting that if you try and cancel the update that it uninstalls the entire game; this happened with Gears 5. When I went to the store to download Gears 5 again, it installed properly to the default install location; not the internal drive.

This only appears to happen when updating a game that is already installed.

    3.0 2Tb Seagate HDD comparability

    Hi,

Your drive will work the same on Series X as it does on Xbox One and you won't need to format it.

However, Series X games or Xbox One games with Series X enhancements will not run from that drive and will either need to be installed internally or to an external SSD designed for Series X/S.

Your hard drive will be too slow for Series X games. They can be stored there, but not run from there.

    My Series X External Storage

As of right now the Ext., SSD is showing in the storage device list. I had unplugged it from the Xbox Series X last night and just plugged it back in after reading your reply. I had read in a separate post of someone doing just that to restore it's identification with a Series X. It is supposed to be the proper 3.0 and 4.5 TB. In other support post it is the recommended version for playing games from however, this Series X about 6 months ago wouldn't allow me to play Division 2 X/S version until I moved it to the internal SSD. So I learned to move 5 (Enhanced for X/S games) to the internal SSD. Capture location is Internal with 5 games and 25 apps and 390 GB free. Install location is External with 6 games and 16 apps and 4.3 TB free. Hasn't been a system update for over a month. I wish I knew why and how apps were moved and the system lost track of the External SSD. And most of my games have been removed (not by me) from the External SSD. I own and had installed 52 games and as I mentioned above I have only 11 games between the 2 storage areas. Also the External SSD no longer emits a green illumination band, but now a yellowish.

Pre download Xbox Series X games

    Not really...

Xbox Series X games / upgrades / updates has to be installed onto the Series X internal or expansion card SSD,

You can have Xbox One games on your external hard drive that will get an Series X upgrade but the games will need to be transferred to the Series X and then the Series X upgrade will need to be downloaded onto the Series X SSD,

    As an example...

I have Marvel Avengers on my external hard drive that will get the Series X upgrade and I will transfer the game over to the Series X SSD ready to download and update the game to the Series X version when available.

"sorry this game cannot be played from external storage"?

Games designed for Series X/S consoles often require internal or expansion packs due to the SSD. These games are optimized to leverage the newer hardware, particularly the SSD, which significantly influences game development and storage, even if it may not be immediately apparent in gameplay.

While some games claim to be enhanced for Series X/S, not all of them actually have these enhancements integrated. Consequently, you can continue playing such games from external drives. It's unclear why this discrepancy exists; it would seem more logical to allow users to select their preferred version regardless.

For Series X/S games, playing from hard drives isn't feasible; instead, you'll need the speed card they offer. The only games compatible with external drives are those designed for Xbox One and earlier consoles.

    Xbox series s

    Yep.

Just plug the external drive into the series s or x & you're good to go.

If you want to play any games that have series s/x enhancements then that game would need to be stored on the internal drive or the external ssd you can buy.
