XBox Series X didn't warn of limited space and wanted to redownload an entire game instead!

A couple of nights ago I tried to play COD: Cold War and was told there was an update. I checked and it was trying to download the ENTIRE game at 203GB!! I checked and saw that my internal storage was 97.1% full so I cancelled the download figuring I'd move something to my external drive to make room for the update which my friend told me was actually less than 20GB.

When I cancelled the download it DID warn me that it might cause the existing game to be deleted because it hadn't been completely installed but since it had only downloaded something like 2% I figured it should be ok. Unfortunately it did delete the ENTIRE game!!

I have a 40Mbs internet connection because it's the best I can get in my area and I share that with my family for everything including TV. If my XBox starts to download something it shuts them all down and causes all kinds of problems and that's not fair to them.

Because my XBox didn't bother to warn me that there was a problem I'm stuck downloading over 200GB to get my game back!! I'll have to download it over several days when they're asleep or out of the house to get it back.

Why didn't my XBox warn me that it needed space on the internal drive? That's all I'm asking for. I don't have a problem with it requiring that certain games run from the internal drive as along as it warns me when there's a problem like this and gives me the opportunity to move some things around. Games are constantly getting updated so I'll have to check it nearly every day just to keep something like this from happening but it can't be all that difficult for them to update the system to warn me so I don't have to keep checking it and doing my own manual disk management.

Fair enough, but it can't be that difficult for it to look at available space and determine whether it will fit or not. And then it should notify me BEFORE starting the download so I can so something about it!

as the xbox replaces files while they are downloading updates it does not have the ability to verify files if you stop or cancel, so if you cancel the update it renders the game useless and you have to re download the entire thing.

Have you changed consoles (eg upgraded to an Xbox One X) or your game capture settings to 4K SDR or HDR? If you selected 4K captures then you now need to manually upload them to Xbox Live. Only 1080p or 720p clips are automatically uploaded to Xbox Live
providing you still have space remaining.

If you want to check if you are near your storage limit on Xbox Live then open Recent Captures and select Show All. There will be a warning if you are near to the limit (not 100% if it displays at 90 or 95%). If you see the warning then select some of the
older clips you no longer want to keep and delete them to free up space on Xbox Live again.

Still don't understand why this game would be limited to the X and S Series only.

Sad to say, looks like I'll have to run it off of the laptop instead.

Well uf you want to play dusk games you should've bought the console for your needs

A disk console like xbox one sx or series x

Digital consoles are just that digital only

And they are designed around smart delivery not disks which downloads thr correct version for your console and space limitations which are compressed not have extras like 4k textures etc
