    Xbox Series X cannot read UHD Movie Discs


    The problem I’m having is that when I put in a UHD disc movie into the disc drive the movie will begin to play no problem but at any point in the movie the screen will go black but sound will continue to play. I will force quit the blu-ray app and try again but it’ll do the same thing again. I’ll restart the xbox and play the movie for a bit and it’ll go black. This happens with all UHD movies.
    The equipment I have is an LG CX running the latest firmware and a JBL 9.1 soundbar.

    I have tried resetting the TV, the xbox, and even the soundbar. I’ve messed around with all of the settings on both the TV and the Xbox and nothing changes the issue. The xbox plays games no problem with the drive or downloaded games, it is only 4k movies where it breaks. Blu-Ray discs play fine.

    Has anyone had this issue with the same equipment I have and come to a solution? Thanks

    Simple Enquiry...

    Xbox One discs are Dual Layer BD-ROM discs 50 GB, which is pretty much standard now. In addition, the One S and the One X can also read UHD Blu-ray feature film discs. Neither the One S or One X can read BDXL discs, I don't know enough about the hardware
    to say for sure if this is due to a hardware or software issue. Note that despite the similar storage capabilities, UHD Movie Blu-ray discs are factory pressed, while BDXL is a writable format largely for burning discs with a PC.

    Despite the One S and the One X's ability to read UHD discs, they will not be used for Game media.

    Sorry about your issue there.

    Is it just this one game or do other Xbox 360 discs have issues?

    The Series X optical drive contains two lasers, one for reading DVD discs and one for reading Blu-Ray discs.

    Have you also tried DVD movie discs to see if they play? They must be DVD discs, not HD or UHD BD discs.

    Unfortunately if the drive has a fault reading discs, you'll need to get it repaired. If your console is out of warranty it will be at a cost.

    Hey there EmbodiedAlarm33,

    Does this issue happen with other UHD movies as well? Or just with The Revenant? It's possible the disc is defective and the console's Blu-ray player is having a problem reading the UHD disc. You might need to exchange the UHD disc with the retailer if other
    discs are working properly.

    Series X question

    I ended up doing that as I was a bit worried about the optical drive in my Xbox One x when it refused to play certain 4k Blue ray disks.
    My old Xbox One X had issues with some UHD movies, so much so that I too bought a stand alone UHD Blue-ray player. Playback issues were (probably still are) common on the One X. I've never played a single Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray or DVD in my Series X.

    There really isn't any need to test all of the discs. Test a few. If the discs are in good clean order they would have played on another BD player.

    Xbox One X should get an "upgrade" to an Ultra HD Blu-ray Player for 4K to be worth it.

    The One X can already play 4K UHD Blu-Ray movie discs, the same as the One S. There's nothing to upgrade.
