Xbox Series S - generating heat in sleep mode

    Hi all!

I’m sorry in advance for any dumb questions I’ve been posting - I’m new to this generation of Xbox as my last console was the 360.

Sometimes, when I am not using my console for a while, I put a dust cover over it to keep it free of dust buildup. This is always done when the console is fully powered off and the heat has had time to dissipate from the console.

Last night, I left it in standby mode with the internet connect off, so it wasn’t performing updates or anything. I placed the dust cover over it and this morning notice a lot of heat had built up, and the fan was running (not super intense but it was definitely trying to exhaust the buildup of heat).

I didn’t know the console would generate so much heat in sleep mode, and due to the dust cover sort of blocking the vent, the console had become slightly hot to the touch in places it usually isn’t when operating normally with the vents unblocked.

I’m worried I may have damaged my console, or caused it harm.

To be clear, I never ever block the vents during gameplay or normal use, and always keep it in a well ventilated area. This was the first time I made this mishap with the dust cover while in sleep mode. I won’t use it going forward unless the console is only powered off.

Does anyone else notice their console getting hot in sleep mode?

    :)

Xbox Series S - generating heat in sleep mode

Hello Scott, this is Manuela. I'm an Independent Advisor and community user like you, ready to assist with this.

    Not a Microsoft employee.

As you're using a dust cover above it, I highly recommend you to don't use it and verify if the heat you feel after a while in sleep mode has the same intensity or not.

It's normal that the console generates heat while it's on sleep mode. However, you shouldn't feel it extremely hot.

Additionally, please make sure that your console has the proper space for a correct ventilation. You can review the necessary distance by visiting the article below:

But, anyway, why my Xbox series s using this energy saver sleep mode, startup even using my controller?

    Xbox series s gets hot

    Heat is entirly normal.

However unlike others have speculated, the Series S is designed with a giant vent right above the heat sink for a reason, to get the heat out. Depending on what game you’re playing and whst. You’re doing, more heat is generated

Series S is a small box. The power display and other heat generating components are on the left. Air is drawn across and vented from the black circle

    Lag and stutter issues

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing lag and frame rate issues on your Xbox Series S. Here are some possible solutions you could try:

Switch to a different graphics mode: Next-generation games typically offer two graphics modes: one for a higher resolution and one for a higher frame rate. Try switching to another graphics mode and see if that helps.

Restart the Xbox Series S: As with most electronic devices, a simple restart may be the easiest solution; restart the console to see if that helps.

Make sure the Xbox Series S is adequately cooled: Both Xbox Series X and Series S consoles use fans to keep the consoles cool. A hot console may underperform, so you need to make sure there are no heat issues.

Free up space on the Xbox Series S SSD: SSDs perform best when there is 10-20% free space as a general rule. If the Xbox Series S SSD is too full, it might be a good idea to uninstall some games.

Check your monitor or TV: A possible FPS drop and lag issue on the Xbox Series X|S might not involve the console at all. If you see low FPS with all games, the problem could be with your TV; Connect the console to another TV or monitor and see if the problem persists.

Check if the FPS loss and lag on the Xbox Series X|S occurs with other games: Not all games are programmed the same. If the problem occurs with only one game, it could be due to one or more problems with that game.
