Xbox Series S, Game update installs full game again. Takes double the space on hard drive....

some updates alter the game so much it has to download the game again, if you cancel the update yes it wipes the game install out, once the update is complete the game will not use double the space.

also how are you on a low data plan, though they did away with data caps a while ago.

When this happens, it means the update failed or was interested so the reserved space will remain but the game will need to reinstall itself to prevent data corruption.

It might look like it's taking up double space, but it isn't.

To avoid this, always allow updates to complete before they are interrupted or cancelled.

I installed them on my old xbox one and transferred them to the external hard drive so I know they are on the hard drive

All my installed games appear correctly as installed on my Xbox one if I connect the hard drive to it. But when I connect the hard drive to my Series S, most of the installed games appear but about 9 of them do not. The missing games appear as ready to install on my Series S

You can use the drive, but games that have been optimised for Series X|S can only run via either the internal SSD or a 1TB Expansion card.

You can archive your X|S games to an external mechanical hard drive which can be quicker than downloading/installing them again, but they can't be run or updated when stored there. Standard Xbox One BC games will from an external hard drive as they did on the Xbox One.

if you're running an Xbox series S, it will take up almost half your storage
