Xbox One X not shutting down or restarting.

I recently started playing Assassins Creed Odyssey on my Xbox One X without issue, that is until I opened the Edge browser and my system froze and I had to force the shutdown/restart by power cycling with the button on the machine. Now whether simple coincidence or not I have more than one issue plaguing me. Firstly each time I want to continue my game (despite saving my progress after reaching level 9) I'm back down to a lower level and my recent saves are gone. I understand clearing local save games etc should resolve this but now we have the other issue.
apart from my machine suddenly being slower than a Zamboni on half power it will not turn off or restart when I tell it to through the settings menu options or pressing the Xbox button on the controller. My only option has been to hold in the Xbox button on the console or to flick the switch off at the wall whereupon it tells me it didn't shut down properly so I select restart and get back in that way. Jump ahead to this morning when I decided to hold the eject and power buttons to access the trouble shoot menu and restore factory settings or perform an offline update if needed but instead of loading into that properly it started the system somewhat normally but I am now looking at an image that no longer takes up my full TV screen. My 75 inch screen has got a 4 inch black border. And I still have the same issue of nothing happening when Full shutdown or Restart now are clicked on.

Anyone else had this sort of thing happen and solved the issue? I failed to find anything helpful in my search so far.
