  1. Xbox one X no longer recognizing working external USB media drive

I have a WD 2 TB external hard drive that I use to store movies. Up until about two weeks ago, it functioned normally. However now, the xbox one x no longer recognizes the external storage drive, and I'm unable to view files on it/play movies with VLC app or media player. In System > settings > storage devices it does not show up. However I know the USB ports work as I plugged in another flash drive with a movie or two on it and it recognized it no problem.

I also know that the 2tb movie drive works and isn't corrupted as my computer recognizes it and can display/play all the files on board. It is formatted to NTFS, not Fat 32

I have tried what I presume are the normal solutions on the forums:

    A) Holding power button to do a power cycle

    B) Trying the different USB ports (these all work with the other flash drive

    C) Unplugging the xbox one x from the power supply/wall for over 5 minutes and letting it 'reset' or whatnot

    D) I have installed all updates on the xbox one x

    What I have not tried:

    A) replacing the cable from my USB 2tb to micro b, I know it works though as that is what I use to plug into the computer, is it possible for it to work with pc but not with xbox?

    B) Formatting the drive. I have like 1tb, or 300 movies on there so it would be a colossal project to try and reestablish all that.

The frustrating part is I know the drive works and functions properly as soon as I plug it into the computer everything shows up normally. Is it possible the cable is worn out and doesn't provide enough power to be recognized on the xbox? Even though it did flawlessly a week or two ago?

Is it possible I put something on the drive that would make it corrupted to xbox? like a subtitle track or some odd file extension that would prevent the xbox from recognizing it? (I tried removing anything I had put on recently and checking again, no luck of course)

Also this external hard drive is a drive that does not have a separate cable for power supply, it uses the power of whatever it is plugged into I believe to power it.

Any help would be appreciated =)

    :)

External harddrive for media not recognised by Xbox one

My PNY 128gb usb flash drive that was connected to my XBOX One when updated is no longer recognized by my TV's USB Media port either. It is still recognized by all my computers. This is saddening, luckily I have a 16gb Media drive that is still recognized
    by both.

I've tried all types of formatting of the 128gb drive and nothing is working, kinda frustrating really!

It worked! Hooray! I appreciate your help, hopefully it didn't clear my saved game information. But I'll take it. Wish I knew what the problem was but guess I can't complain about the results 🥳

Thanks for your reply! Any idea what would cause it to suddenly stop working when it did previously? Would the factory reset delete all my apps and such?

Hi there welcome to the community forum! Christopher here, an Xbox fan just like you and has been on Xbox for years already. I would really love to make your day by helping you out. After reading all tpur troubleshooting I relised you haven't tried the factory reset! That has helped me before when my EHDD gets tricky!

The first step in resetting an Xbox One is to open the main menu. This can be accomplished in one of two ways:

Press the home button on your Xbox One controller. This is the illuminated button with a stylized X that is centrally located on the front of the controller near the top.

Alternately, you can press the left bumper until you reach the home tab, and then press left on the d-pad.

Press down on the d-pad until you reach the gear icon.

Press the A button to select the gear icon.

With all settings highlighted, press the A button again to open the settings menu.

Press down on the d-pad until you reach System.

Press the A button to open the System submenu.

With console info highlighted, press the A button again.

Press down on the d-pad to select reset console.

Press the A button to select this option and move to the final step.

Press left on the d-pad to select Reset and keep my games & apps. Then press the A button. This is the less thorough of the two options, as it only resets the Xbox One firmware and settings without touching your games and apps. Try this first, as it allows you to avoid downloading everything all over again.
