Xbox One X HDMI Faulty HDMI Retimer Chip Known Issue

    Hello everyone,

Unfortunately my Xbox One X suddenly stopped outputting any video.

No big deal I thought, I’ll buy a new HDMI cord since the one that came with it was getting old. But the new cord had the same exact issue. No picture.

I’ve fully rebooted the Xbox by powering it off completely and unplugging the AV cable for 5 minutes. Nothing.

I tried a different TV. Nothing.

I tried holding the sync and eject buttons to reset the resolution. Once again, nothing.

Beginning to exhaust all options, I did further research into the HDMI issue.

And to my complete shock, it’s clearly a known hardware fault in the Xbox One X. The retainer chip dies within two years!

Scores and scores of reddit posts, forums posts, and even people here complaining about the exact same thinfg.

There’s even a console repair industry targeting this very problem.

Yet, when customers ask Microsoft about the issue, everyone gets the same response:

“Unless you’re still under a measly 1 year warranty, cough up 250 dollars to replace a 20 dollar retimer chip.”

Feel free to look into the issue yourself.

So, I guess my question is:

Barring a class-action lawsuit is there anything I can even do to get my Xbox replaced or fixed?

I’ve considered bringing it into a local shop, though I’m not certain they’ll fix it. I definitely won’t be buying from Microsoft again unfortunately. I remember my first Xbox 360 Arcade system. Microsoft actually reimbursed those people, since similarly, it was a known issue — but only after a class-action lawsuit.

I recommend anyone who finds this article and experiences the same issue to contact the Bureau of Consumer Protection. It was designed for issues like this.

    :)

    Retimer controller chip

This is pretty frustrating that it's a known issue, warranty or not, and they continue to be sold with faulty HDMI retimer chips. I am in the same boat just a few months after warranty expired.

Can I swap the hdmi chip/retimer from two different consoles?

Hi and thanks for reaching out. I hope you’re doing well. I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you and I'll be happy to help you.

If you have soldering and electronic repair skills, it could be feasible to change the HDMI chips or retimers from two different Xbox consoles, but this is not advised. Any mistakes or damage sustained during the swap could result in additional problems or leave the consoles useless because the HDMI chip or retimer is a delicate component.

Additionally, there may be other problems with the consoles in addition to the HDMI chip or retimer, thus changing the component may not always solve the issue. It might be worthwhile to try to fix both consoles if they are out of warranty and you have experience with electronic repairs, but you must do so carefully and deliberately to prevent causing further harm.

    Blank screen

Hi Josh, yes i've tried two different HDMI cables and in the two different HDMI ports in my TV and I get nothing. I've also tried plugging my laptop via those HDMI cables and they work fine with TV. After searching a bit on internet, my guess is the HDMI
retimer chip needs changing, unless there is other waysor other tricks to try before changing a chip.

    Thanks

    Denis
