Xbox one X freezing and taking forever to start up.

1. Are you able to access your dashboard at all?
2. Does the prompt for the update appear as soon as your console is turned on?
3. Does it still give you the black screen if you decline the update?
4. What style of console are you using (Original White, Xbox 360 S, Xbox 360 E, etc)?
   
5. What type/size storage device are you using? Is it an official Microsoft storage device?

1. No, I can not get to the dashboard at all. Every time I try, it freezes.

2. It prompts for the update right away usually. sometimes it wont even get that far before it loads.

3. Yes, it will go black as soon as I decline. I try to get to the dashboard or sign out and once I choose an option, it freezes.

4. It is an S I believe. Not 100% sure though.

5. Umm... I have just the stock storage that came with it. I got the smaller size.

Also, the error message doesn't stay up long enough for me to read it and then the screen turns black. I can use the xbox button, but as soon as I select something, the system freezes.

There are a few things you may want to try for this issue:

First off, I would look at our
Console Update Troubleshooter, there are a few solutions in there that might help you get your console to update properly.

You may also want to try the possible solutions in our Screen Freeze troubleshooter as well.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Sounds like it could be the HDD could be failing. Have you tried going into Safe Mode and reset the Xbox and keeping games and apps?
