I recently started receiving this error. My system had been working fine for a while running uncompressed 5.1 through my TV (samsung q80) via HDMI and my TV sending audio to my receiver (pioneer vsx-831) via ARC. But a few days ago it suddenly decided to
switch to uncompressed stereo and whenever I try selecting uncompressed 5.1 I receive this error saying my stereo doesn't support this format which is incorrect.

I've been researching this and have tried all solutions I could find online (changing the hdmi video settings updating the audio and then switching back, power cycling, system soft reset) but none of these things are working.

    :)

    Hi corukun,

Thank you for coming to the Xbox forums. I'd be happy to help.

Have you disconnected the HDMI from the console to TV and the HDMI ARC from the TV to the audio receiver? Then reconnect and power cycle the Xbox?

Have you not been able to switch back to 5.1 uncompressed since the error occurred?

Do you have an Xbox One X and if you do, is the Xbox enrolled in the Xbox Insider program? There have been a few preview updates released in the last week or so and if your console is enrolled, it's possible a preview update is causing this bug.

You've done quite a bit of troubleshooting already so we'd appreciate some more information to see what else we can attempt.

    G'day,

I have VSX-531 5.1 and use ARC, but use Bitstream out and Digital DTS in the audio settings. My understanding is this allows the AVR to interpret the signal and provide sound to the relevant speakers.

I have had no trouble with this setting and get enveloping surround sound.

    Hi corukun,

Thank you for the update. It doesn't seem like your Xbox One X is enrolled because that is the current public build for the general population so we can rule out an insider update as the cause.

You mention you have HDR, Freesync and Auto Game mode (auto low latency) on your display. What TV model do you own? Is it made to use HDMI 2.1?

I've seen those display options available on gaming monitors (display port) or new TV's that came out this year or 2018 and they commonly will be HDMI 2.1 to keep up with those display demands if your display is also 4K. Currently the Xbox One X is only
HDMI 2.0b certified, but I'm sure they will be updating the console soon with the correct firmware to make the console more compatible with HDMI 2.1. If this is the case, then that could by why you are having these issues since the Xbox is trying to use the
best possible display settings your TV can handle with Auto-Detect selected, but the Xbox One X isn't quite at the HDMI 2.1 mark yet. Since the Xbox goes through the TV to then continue audio passthrough to the receiver via HDMI ARC, the chain is affected
due to display issues. I think this is why you can only select 5.1 uncompressed when overriding to HDMI, but your display's features are no longer accessible. When using Auto-Detect, the display features are there, but audio can't complete passthrough and
the Xbox assumes your receiver is not capable of 5.1, which it is.

Let us know if this correlates to your situation at all.

It's the 2019 Samsung Q80R and this model only utilizes 2.0b.

    Thanks for the reply,

You know, I had not actually tried unplugging the HDMIs and resetting which seems an obvious thing to do. Unfortunately I just tried it and it didn't fix the issue.

I am able to select Uncompressed 5.1 when I change the Video Display Override to HDMI from Auto-Select but I am then not able to turn on HDR, Freesync or Auto Game Mode. When I change back to Auto-Select it no longer allows me to select Uncompressed 5.1

I am on an X system, I was enrolled in the Insider Program with my previous Xbox One but hadn't installed it on this X system so I don't believe it's been getting preview updates. To confirm what I'm on my system is showing OS Version 10.0.18362.3055 (19h1_release_xbox_dev_1905.190510-1845)
