Xbox one wireless controller unable to connect to Windows 10 properly

My controller - Xbox one wireless

When I connect to my PC running Windows 10

1. using a USB cable, I get the error - USB device not recognized. (The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.)

2. using Bluetooth, there is a huge lag from button press to action on the PC, and sometimes the button presses are neglected.

I tried updating the drivers from Device Managers via both bluetooth and USB ports(search online for new driver updates), but the pop up said I already had the latest device drivers.

I installed Xbox Accessories from the Windows store. I clicked on the little flask option and was able to see my button presses recognised(some of them). Note - This was connected via bluetooth because the USB ports do not seem to be working for the controller.
(The ports work fine for everything else.)

The original XBox Elite controller requires the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 so without that adapter it will not be recognized properly by Windows. The newer, Elite Series 2 can connect to a Windows 10 PC without the need of an adapter.

Hi how old is the controller ? It could be the controller itself that's the issue.

I checked. My windows installation is up to date.

I clicked on the relevant options on the linked page but was unable to find a solution. The last page after selecting the applicable options told me to ask for an exchange.

I would suggest trying another controller to see if that controller is the issue, if possible, and if so, get a replacement for it as suggested on the troubleshooter.
