My xbox is not detecting my external hard drive anymore. It was fine when I turned on the xbox this morning and started streaming. I could see all of my installed games and everything was fine. When I ended stream and went to play a different game it only shows 9 are installed on my xbox and I know 3 of them were not installed on the internal storage. I followed all of the steps on the xbox support page. I've restarted and power cycled my xbox at least 15 times. My external is a 4tb SeaGate xbox green hard drive, if that helps. I've also tried putting in all of the available USB ports on the xbox and I just cleaned everything out with compressed air to make sure that the connections in the ports were good. Please help

    :)

Xbox One S not registering external storage when it was fine this morning until I ended my stream and tried to switch games

    Hi there Andrew C.

I am Lumie and I would love to assist you today.

I am so sorry you are having issues with your external storage
Since the drive was functioning fine earlier and then suddenly stopped being recognized, the problem could be related to software, hardware, or even the external drive itself. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try to identify and resolve the issue:

Check the External Hard Drive on Another Device
Connect the Seagate 4TB drive to a computer to ensure that the drive is still functioning properly. If the drive is recognized and you can access the files, the issue might be with the Xbox. If the drive is not recognized on the computer, it may have failed.

Ensure the drive is formatted to the correct file system for Xbox (typically NTFS). If the computer recognizes it, back up the data if possible and then reformat it.

Check Xbox Software and System Settings
Ensure your Xbox One S is up to date. Sometimes, updates fix compatibility issues or bugs related to external storage.

Go to "Settings" > "System" > "Storage" to see if the external drive shows up there. It may be recognized but not accessible for some reason.

If it does show up, try to "Format for Games & Apps" again if the option is available. This can sometimes resolve issues with recognition.

    Power Cycle the External Drive
Unplug the external hard drive from the Xbox and disconnect any power source if it has one. Leave it disconnected for a few minutes before plugging it back in.

After ensuring the drive has been properly disconnected for a while, reconnect it to the Xbox and power it up.

    Try Another External Drive
If you have another external drive, try connecting it to see if the Xbox recognizes it. This can help determine if the issue is with the Seagate drive or the Xbox.

Sometimes, the issue can be with the USB cable. Try using a different USB cable if you have one available.

    Clear Persistent Storage
Go to "Settings" > "Disc & Blu-ray" > "Persistent Storage" and clear it. This sometimes helps with issues related to external devices.

Perform a Full Shutdown and Restart
Hold the Xbox power button on the console for 10 seconds until it fully powers down. Unplug the power cable from the back of the Xbox and wait for at least 30 seconds.

Plug the power cable back in and turn on the Xbox. Then, reconnect the external drive.

Check for Firmware Updates on the External Drive
Some external drives have firmware that can be updated. Check Seagate’s website for any available updates for your specific drive model.

    Check for Overheating Issues
Ensure the external drive is not overheating. Excessive heat can cause it to disconnect or malfunction. Make sure it's in a well-ventilated area and not overheating during use.

    Inspect for Physical Damage
Check the USB ports on both the Xbox and the external drive for any visible damage or debris that might be causing poor connections.

Look for any physical damage to the drive itself, which could indicate that it might have been damaged.

Factory Reset the Xbox (as a Last Resort)
If none of the above steps work, you might consider performing a factory reset of your Xbox. Ensure you back up any data you don’t want to lose, as this will erase all data on the Xbox. Go to "Settings" > "System" > "Console info" > "Reset console."

    I hope this helps.

I shall be here for your response. -Lumie

    External storage

    Hi Daniel.

Yes, your current external storage will work. But for Series S/X and Xbox One Games with Smart Delivery, thoughs have to run from the internal storage. But for Original Xbox, X360 and Xone game without enhancement, they should still run fine from your external
    unit.

Thanks for reaching out and I can say this is a fine way to add extra storage to the Xbox One S.

It will work perfectly with your grandsons Xbox One S. Check out the Set Up External Section on the Manage storage on Xbox One support

External Storage Not Registering on XBOX ONE

i see a lot of bad reviews for that exact drive as they sell them pre configured for ps4 or xbox one, most of the reviews are either it didnt work or failed after a month or so, if it is not being detected via xbox i would send it back for a refund.
