    Xbox One S keeps reverting an automatic IPv4 address which can’t connect to the internet


    For Christmas I got a brand new Xbox One S, but its been wrought with issues from the start.

    The most persistent issue is that it keeps disconnecting from the Internet. I set up its IPv4 addresses manually, yet the xbox will revert to an automatic IP address, subnet mask, and gateway that are incompatible with the network immediately after leaving
    settings. Sometimes it will say that it cannot connect to the router’s DHCP server, other times it will claim to be connected to the internet but when I try to connect to xbox live, it says I’m offline. Once it reverted to the automatic addresses while mid-game
    and I lost connection. Restarting the xbox does not help.

    Initially, my dad thought that other devices connected to the home network were prioritized over the new Xbox One S (apparently there are 57 other devices connected to the network) so he assigned a specific IP address to the console. Yet the console still
    reverts to the incompatible network settings. Restarting the router does not help. Sometimes the xbox will accept its assigned network settings when entered manually, but it’ll revert to the automatic settings once starting up again. Sometimes it’ll reject
    the settings outright.

    The console is connected to the network via a wired connection.

    I don’t know anything else about our home router. My dad doesn’t allow me to interact with it and won’t tell me any more details about it. He believes this is a router issue, but I think this is a problem with the console itself.

    To resolve issues encountered during the inital set-up, I had to download the xbox one s software from the xbox support site and reinstall it via a flashdrive. Would that have caused the problem I’m facing now? If not, could this be due to a hardware defect?

    I’m hoping this isn’t the result of defective hardware and someone knows a solution I can implement.

    Why would you disable IPv6?

    Internet Protocol version 6 is the most current network protocol, bringing several improvements over IPv4. For Xbox, the expansion removes the need for Network Address Translation (NAT), which can interfere with multiplayer gaming and chat over IPv4 networks.

    That statement is a bit ambiguous as IPv6 is the latest protocol that allows a lot more addresses for every device on the web, and if you read the link
    you'll notice that

    It wouldn't surprise me if IPv4 is phased out in the future, as far as using a XBOX is concerned.

    IPv4 will eventually be phased out everywhere. Right now though there are still way to many providers that do not support IPv6 so I really dont see xbox phasing it out. Not for years at least. The connections really dont work well with xbox tunneling IPv6
    packets onto an IPv4 connection either.
