Xbox One S is not playing certain DVDs

Been having an issue lately with my Xbox One S where some DVDs won't work but others will. I've tested this and Blu-Rays seem to work fine. Some normal DVDs work with no issues but others don't register on the console as being inserted.

Previously I would get an error message, however now, the xbox can't detect that a disc has been inserted.

I've made sure that the DVDs are all applicable to my region, some are brand new so have no marks on them at all and others are kept in good condition as well.

So far I've tried inserting the disc but holding it for a second before letting it take the disc. I've performed a power cycle, I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Blu-Ray app.

If there's any advice anyone could it have it'd be much appreciated because I'm currently clueless

Sure, they're not new releases just brand new copies of DVDs that are a bit older.

I've tried ones that had worked previously, like An American Werewolf in London, Cloverfield, Avatar - all of them didn't register. The strange part is that some DVDs do register and work where others don't. I've made sure it's not an issue with the disc by testing them on other consoles where they work fine. Really scratching my brain as to what it could be.

I take it Blu-Ray disc movies are working okay? Have you tried many of the ones you own? Games are detected?

Bear in mind that the Xbox One S, One X and the current Series X actually have two lasers, one for reading DVD discs (including Xbox 360 discs) and one for reading Blu-Ray discs, which also includes Xbox games as they are also on BD-Disc.

If the DVD laser is giving out, it won't read certain DVD discs, and this is likely the reason for the issues you are experiencing. This is also why Blu-Rays and Xbox One games are not effected. There is nothing wrong with your DVD's, it's the console's optical drive that is faulty.

The BD player frequently takes awhile to be updated for new security schemes, if these are new movies, that would be my first guess

Can you give me an example of ones that work, and ones that don't?

Exchanged the Xbox at shop I bought it from, it played one DVD so I thought great but no same problem when I tried another one yesterday and the DVD plays fine in the other Xbox, PS3 and DVD player at home and a Xbox s at someone else's home!! Needs sorting!

SONIC this update had nothing to do with making xbox's not read certain disc's and does not make people eligible for free 360's. Microsoft stated that was a earlier update not this one. More in likely people's dvd drives are failing due to faulty drives
or they are using un official 360's.
