Xbox One S controller doens't recognize Chat Headset's mic

Thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about the current issue you are running into, Let's go ahead and take a look at these troubleshooting
resources:

• Have you
  updated your controller’s softwareto
  support the Stereo Headset ?
  
• Make sure your controller has fresh batteries. When the batteries get weak, some controller functions, such as audio
  and rumble, are turned off to conserve the remaining power.
  
• Make sure your Headset Adapter is firmly plugged into your controller and that your Stereo Headset’s 3.5-mm cable
  is securely plugged into the Headset Adapter. You will know it’s plugged in properly if you press the mute button and the LED lights up.
  
• Try your Xbox One Stereo Headset with another device, such as a laptop, to see if the headset is working. If not,
  the headset will need to be replaced. To order a replacement, go to the Xbox Online Service
  Center.
  
• Try your Stereo Headset and Stereo Headset Adapter on another controller, if you can. If the headset works on the
  second controller, try updating the
  first controlleragain.

thanks for a quick reply.

Unfortunately I've already tried all those methods (except from trying my headset with a laptop, because my headset doesn't plug through 3,5 mm jack, but through the other one) and none worked:

I've updated my controller with chat headset plugged in and it brought nothing

I've tried using the headset while the controller was wired via USB and it brought nothing as well

I could tell that the headset was correctly plugged in because it got recognized by the controller and because the mute button lit each time I pressed

I did try the headset with 4 different controllers - 3 of them were the newer Xbox One S controllers and the 4th was the standard Xbox One controller. With the latter one the headset actually worked correctly and the mic was recognized as it supposed to.

And I've also checked for updates for the console itself - it is up to date.

Are there any other possible solutions to this problem?

I recently have the same opposite issue. I plug a mic/headset (which is my cellphone one) and it only recognize it as Headset. It´s weird, considering that it was not the first time using it. I use it on a lot other times, and did work as expected. So, maybe
try blowing into your 3.5mm jack in, or cleaning the headset plug. It may work, maybe? The mic ones and the heatset ones have different plug (Two strips for the headset ones, three for the mic ones), it all depends on the controller.

As you can see above in my repro. People can only hear me if I connect headset directly to the controller without the adapter. So game chat settings are not influencing the behavior and of course, I doublechecked that. Next I have tried different controllers:

1. Xbox Original controller - same behavior

2. Xbox One S controller - it appears that Xbox One S controller incompatible with headset adapter at all!!! BEWARE! I cannot plug it in! It is like socket and plug have slightly different sizes.

3. My second Elite wireless controller - same behavior

Chat Balance/In-game music balance/Mute/Volume up down - buttons are functioning, but mic is probably not working for the game chat. And there is no way to troubleshoot and control mic behavior, when you are not in the party.
