    I have RDR2 on XB1, installed on an external SSD. I did not play it for a few months. When i went to play it and put the disk in, it began installing the entire game, and deleted my saved data. This is not the first time this has happened and I'm tired
    of it. now the entire game has to be reinstalled and my single player progress is gone. This has happened with Skyrim SE and other games as well. It seems that this happens when im not fully signed into my profile, as the system also has my kids' accounts
    on it. This is incredibly frustrating and has only happened since the beginning of the summer and the last few updates to the xbox one platform. Why is the system not checking if the game has been installed on the system before and why is it not checking the
    external drive for the game? Why is it that the first thing it does is destroy saved data? how can this be prevented in the future?

    Getting a physical disc to play a preordered game that wasn’t paid for

    Delete the game and install from disc or with the disc in the console, open the store page of the game and see if there is an install button there. That should overwrite your license.

    Then reinstall using the downloads

    Digital downloads doesn't overwrite previous installs

    Hi,

    You can pause updates, but you can't cancel them. The reason is because updates modify the contents of the already installed game files directly. Incidently, this why you can't play a game that is in the process of being updated.

    This isn't something that can be fixed in a dashboard update. The files for updates aren't downloaded then installed, they are downloaded and installed at the same time.

    Updates overwrite the original game files. If your installed game is say 40GB, and the update is 10GB, this won't necessarily mean your updated game now uses 50GB.

    must be just forza 4 i get a warning about overwriting with forza 3 and countless other games, the only other one game i dont get a warning about overwriting the save for is cuphead.

    Xbox One X - Updates and External Hard Drive

    In some cases they do overwrite the game's files so that in the end its not as big as you'd think. You can always move games from one drive to the other as well, to make more room! (When it does run out of room it won't install)
