Xbox One Mic icon is always off and muted

Hi - we have 2 wired headsets and we're unable to speak or hear through either of them.

One of them is brand new and compatible with Xbox One - we've tested it using a switch and it's not faulty.

We're using the new Xbox one controllers (with the 3.5mm jack socket) as specified by the headset guide.

We've reviewed all setting on the Xbox - Audio, Devices and Privacy.

We think the issue is that the mute icon in the top right hand side of the home page on the Xbox menu is constantly turned to mute for some reason.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    :)

Hi - yes we've tried with a phone headset and it makes no difference. It's almost as if the mute icon is permanently on mute. Do you know if this is a known bug or if there's a fix?

The only other thing I can think of trying is a factory reset. What's the implication there?

Thanks for the reply. I've tried a hard reset and checked both controllers are updated with the latest firmware. Still the mic icon is showing as muted.

How do we check is there's been a communication block as I've seen this could be the issue.

Is this a known bug with the xbox one?
Have you tested the controller with another mic? A simple phone headset will be suitable to test.

If you've received a communication block you would have had received a message from Microsoft informing you of this violation.

I've done some research for you and see that this has been an ongoing issue but hasn't been added as an officially known bug.

According to one thread, one xbox user has had luck by correcting the problem.

The too had no issues, then bought a new controller and headset for her son. It gave her the same issue of muted mic. Despite a factory reset etc, it still didn't work. She was then advised to obtain a headset adapter which solved her problem.

UPDATE... We purchased a 3.5mm adapter for the controller and the headset is now working! An extra £25 but my son is delighted. Thanks for all your feedback!

Should you still wish to try a factory reset, please remember to connect and sync with Xbox Live beforehand.

Warning Resetting your console to its factory defaults erases all accounts, saved games, settings, and home Xbox associations. Anything not synchronized with Xbox Live will be lost. Your
console syncs with Xbox Live automatically when it’s connected with the service, so if you've been offline for a while, connect to Xbox Live before taking these steps.

If you’re ready to reset your console to the factory default settings, follow these steps:

    1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
    3. Select Reset console.
    4. On the Reset your console? screen, you'll see three options:
      • Reset and remove everything. This option resets the console to factory settings. All user data, including accounts, saved games, settings, home Xbox associations, and all games and apps will be deleted. Use this option when selling
or gifting the console, or as a last resort in some troubleshooting cases.
      • Reset and keep my games & apps. Use this option as your primary choice when troubleshooting. It will reset the OS and delete all potentially corrupted data without deleting your games or apps. In some cases, if a corrupt game file
is causing the issue you're troubleshooting, you may have to choose Reset and remove everything, but you should always start with Reset and keep my games & apps.
      • Cancel. To back out of this screen, simply select the Cancel button. No action has been taken at this point. This is a safe exit from this screen.

After you select one of the options, your Xbox One console will begin the process of erasing the selected content and resetting itself to the default settings.

    Hi there,

If you're seeing the audio settings that means that it is being picked up at least.

Have you tried a hard reset as yet? (I'm assuming you have as you've mentioned the steps we'll usually suggest you look at).

One thing I can recommend is to check that your controller firmware is up to date.

    1. If you have a stereo headset adapter, plug it into the bottom of your controller so it can also get updates.
    2. If you're using a stereo headset adapter, plug in a headset (a headset must be plugged in so the adapter will turn on).
    3. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, select Profile & system > Settings > Devices & streaming > Accessories, and then select the controller you want to update.
    4. On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select “…” to check the firmware version for your controller.
    5. If it says “Update,” select Firmware version, and then follow the steps provided.

    Things to keep in mind

    • The auto-detect feature of this update may not work immediately if you plugged your stereo headset adapter into the controller while downloading a system update, or while the console was turned off. To fix this, go to the Home screen and unplug the
adapter. Then, plug the adapter back into the controller.
    • You only need to update your controller one time to use the stereo headset adapter. However, if you plan to use the stereo headset adapter with other Xbox One controllers, you’ll need to follow this process for each controller. Additionally, check
for new updates periodically as Xbox frequently ships new controller features and improvements.
