Xbox One Fortnite keeps asking for Xbox gold subscription

I have downloaded the game Fortnite with no problems. It starts and loads the main page and then takes me to a xbox gold live subscription page.

Is this game free to play on the Xbox or not?

Free to play games will be free from Xbox Live subscriptions, but not quite yet as while Microsoft have announced these types of games will be free to play, they haven't provided a date of when.

For now you'll still need a subscription to play online. You don't need to buy a full year as 3 month subs are available online reputable sites such as Amazon that you can redeem on the console.

Gold is required to play online. Since Fortnite is an online only game, it requires Gold. They are working on changing that for Fortnite and other games, but currently it still requires Gold.

To play Fortnite on the Xbox One you will need a Gold subscription.

Fortnite is a free-to-play game which means it does not require an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Xbox Live Gold subscription is not just required for free-to-play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, Warzone 2.0 etc.
