Xbox One FIX!, black screen after update 2021!

I tried everything on this post to fix our Xbox One with the black screen after the latest update (August 2021) like holding down the sync and eject buttons at the same time as well as unplugging everything after holding down the power button for 15 minutes, NOTHING WORKED. This is what did work on our Xbox One that was bought in 2015:

1) KEEP THE XBOX PLUGGED IN.

2) UNPLUG THE ETHERNET CABLE (INTERNET CABLE) FROM THE BACK OF THE XBOX!

3) POWER ON THE XBOX

4) PRESS AND HOLD THE SYNC AND EJECT BUTTONS AT THE SAME TIME UNTIL YOU HEAR A SECOND BEEP.

This should bring up the reset screen. Automatically this worked for our system and brought up the reset screen with the option to keep or delete our games. Once we chose the reset option to keep our games and plugged the internet cable back in we had to sign back in using our Xbox email and password. I thought we would lose our live game pass but it reloaded everything as it was before the update.

Didn’t touch the Xbox since Spring so when I turned on this week the update occurred. When update completed and after reboot the screen went dark after Green Splash screen.

Did a lot of internet digging and performed the following:

1)turned off again, unplug, plug back in

2) press and hold Sync+eject than tap power power, kept holding them and splash screen showed up,giving options to reset defaults or reset from USB. The usb was not recognized ( it was properly created). So had to reset to factory defaults. Everything seems ok now.

I hate companies that FORCE buggy and not fully tested updates that cause ‘screen of death’ with no warning or ability to easily backout or correct. Shows complete disregard and concern for customers. I may decide to switch to PS and I have been a ardent Xbox supporter since day 1. I use a console for gaming over a PC for ease of usage, don’t have to worry about drivers and patches and compatibility tweaking, etc, I have no time or interest in wasting my time tweaking settings or looking up patch info to play games. This experience definitely does not fit into that criteria.

I have just experienced the same issue. My Xbox crashed in the middle of an update and now after the green boot up screen I get the black screen of death. I've tried soft and hard reboots and after holding down the sync and eject button I am now stuck in low resolution black screen of death.

Not sure what I'm supposed to do and now my sons and I are without a gaming machine.

I’ve been hit with the same issue today. I’m not going to complain if the reset does not do the job. I’m just going to move to Sony. I’ve had an Xbox since 2001, when it was first launched, and encountered all sorts of issues, including the “ring of death” on the older 360. Somehow ;-) Microsoft seems to just disappoint with failing hardware and sketchy updates that require fixes. I think I’ve had enough of this now. It’s time to see what the PlayStation is all about because I’ve been tempted in the past but have always decided to stay loyal to Xbox. Sad thing is, my annual Gold membership renewed 12 days ago so trying to get a refund is going to be interesting!

Gutted to say goodbye Xbox :-( but enough is enough

@CRob2 this helped me after about a dozen attempts to boot to the reset screen.
The detailed instructions helped (ie. hold both buttons, then tap the power button once).

Prior to this I also unplugged the console and TV from power for 5mins, so this combined with the button presses got me into the reset screen. Thanks!
