Xbox One controller won’t connect/turn on

My Xbox one controller won’t connect or turn on. I’ve tried replacing the batteries and using a usb cable (both of which work on other controllers), but neither work. I’ve tried to update it, but I get get it to connect to update it.

It has done this before, but so far I haven’t been able to get it to work this time.

It worked yesterday, but stopped working, worked again briefly, and then disconnected again and has not worked since (so far).

One controller will work but the other won’t be able to connect as another player but can do the basics like turn off the console or go to the home page.

Hi Xkilljoy98,

If the battery change doesn't work, try this:

1.Turn off your Xbox One completely by holding down the power button on the front of the system for 10 seconds.

2.Disconnect the console power cable for a few minutes.

3.Use a micro-USB cable that you know is good (try the others if the first one doesn't work) to connect the controller to the system.

4.Reconnect your Xbox and turn it back on using the power button on the system. Do not press anything on the controller until the Xbox starts up.

5.Try pressing the controller's Xbox button at this point and see if it works.

If it doesn't work, go to Microsoft Device Support page. Log in with your Microsoft account, register your console if you have not already done so and you can proceed
through the steps to replace the controller. If Microsoft won't replace it, you should instead find an agreement on a new controller.

So the problem has actually gotten worse, the console turns on but the controller won’t connect and the Xbox no longer sends an HDMI signal to the monitor. I ordered a new PSU in hopes that solves the problem

Hey Vincent,

Yes, you can use the controller while connected to the console using usb cable. This won’t affect performance and won’t damage the controller. Using the controller wired of course means you don’t need to use batteries.

You can also update the controller while connected through USB cable.

Standard xbox one controllers require a micro USB cable. The elite series 2 and xbox adaptive controllers require USB type C cable.
