You can check if the controller is within warranty by going to the
device support page here, and if not already done so, register your console.

Click on the console, and start an online repair request. Choose that you have an issue with an accessory on the drop down list, and on the second list choose the controller model.

If you are asked for the controller serial number, you can find that in the battery compartment.

You can then continue with the repair order, and if it's within warranty, it'll be a free repair. If it's out of warranty, you will be shown a price and you can still decide if you want to continue, or abort the repair order.

I think the warranty is only 90 days from the date of purchase though

Thank you for step by step instructions. I have gone through that process and have a repair order going.

Also you could try taking the controller back to where you bought the device from with your receipt as when i bought my one x they said that the controller can be returned if any issues without having to return the full console.

Thats worth a try.
