Xbox One Controller successfully connected to PC via bluetooth does not work with Windows apps.

The controller successfully connects and shows up in my devices as an Xbox controller but it does not function in games or bring up the game bar using the controller shortcut. With regards to the game bar, I have made sure the shortcut options are enabled in the game bar itself and in the windows game bar settings. However, the controller works in all games launched from Steam when using bluetooth. The controller also works perfectly fine when using a wired connection. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not but it also works fine when connected to an actual Xbox, wired or wireless. It can also connect to my phone with bluetooth and control it just fine. But when I tested it on another computer it was having the same issues as when connected to my computer. It's fine when wired but limited functionality over bluetooth. When I go to Devices and Printers>Xbox Wireless Controller>Game Controller Settings>Properties and go to the Test tab, I can see that all buttons and sticks are working and the computer is receiving inputs. I also noticed something when playing Forza 4. When using m&k I can see the pointer on the screen. When I push a button on the controller when connected via bluetooth the pointer disappears. The pointer reappears when I start using m&k again. This is further evidence that the windows apps are detecting inputs form the controller but failing to do anything with them. Things I have tried:

    • resetting my computer
    • complete shutdown, removing power, and rebooting
    • uninstalling and reinstalling device
    • updating drivers
    • updating windows
    • updating bluetooth drivers
    • updating controller
    • clean boot in Windows
    • uninstalling and reinstalling gaming services
    • checking time and region accuracy
    • reset windows store app
    • reinstalled xbox app
    • reset game bar
    • reset router
    • signing out and deleting Steam
    • using a recharge kit battery pack
    • using rechargeable AA batteries
    • using basic AA batteries
    • Anything from these links or the basic troubleshooting page
      • https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/controller/connect-a-wireless-controller
      • https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/controller/wireless-controller-solution
      • https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/controller/connect-xbox-wireless-controller-to-pc
I had no issues with the controller for the longest and I don't know what caused it to start having this issue. I have not tried using another Xbox controller because I only have 1 with bluetooth functionality. I also want to avoid a Windows reinstall if possible if that wasn't evident by my attempts at a fix. So to recap, my controller will only function in Steam when using bluetooth. Other apps detect inputs but do nothing with them. The controller works perfectly in all apps when using a wired connection.

xbox one controller for pc, adapter or bluetooth?

    Hey GiddyCosine4817!

As Geth mentioned, Bluetooth connection to a Windows 10 device will work just fine for Xbox One controllers, depending on the model of the controller. Certain older Xbox One controllers do not support Bluetooth connections.

If you need help determining if your controller can connect via Bluetooth, check out the info under "Option 3" in our guide for

    Hey Tedd27,

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with using your Bluetooth controller for PC gaming. I see you've done a lot of research and tried many things. I may end up repeating some of those steps. Are you using Windows 10?

    • Check to see that your PC is up to date. (Even if it says up to date - click "Check for updates" in case something new appeared)
    • Unpair your controller from the PC (and every other device it's currently paired with)
    • Download the Xbox Accessories app.
    • Open app Xbox Accessories and update the controller (if it needs one, it should automatically prompt you. (My current FW for my Elite Wireless controller is 4.8.1908.0. Standard Xbox Wireless controller FW is 5.11.3118.0).
    • Disconnect from USB cable then Unpair (remove device) controller from windows under Bluetooth & other devices
    • Restart PC
    • Reconnect (pair) controller to windows again via Bluetooth
You can also try disabling your Firewall (if you have multiple anti-virus apps running especially) and see if that may have been blocking a connection.
