XBox One controller bricked after attempting an update using XBox Accessories app on PC....

The title says it all. I tried to update the firmware on my XBox controller using the XBox Accessories app on my PC.

I ran the app after downloading it from the store. It said to plug in the controller, so I did. (Windows recognized it as a controller and said "setting up USB controller," and then a moment later "controller set up."

I clicked on the "..." icon and selected the "update firmware" option. After an "are you sure" warning, the controller shut itself off, and the computer said "setting up controller updater" as if I had plugged a new device into a USB port -- which I did
*not* do. A moment later, it said "controller updater set up."

Then the XBox Accessories app said "Updating." And it sat at 0% for at least 20 minutes. Nothing. I finally exited the app. I tried to re-start the app, but it just says "connect XBox Controller to start" EVEN THOUGH THE CONTROLLER IS CONNECTED!!!

I have read that plugging the controller into an XBox One will force an update. It did not. It does nothing -- it won't even charge. The light on the USB cable doesn't light up. (The USB cable came as part of the "rechargeable pack" -- a rechargeable battery
and special USB cable.) . I have two controllers, the other controller works fine. The "charging" light lights up, it controls the XBox One just fine. I tried the cable with that other controller -- the cable that I know for a fact works perfectly well --
the bricked controller still won't work.

I have left the XBox on, at the home screen, with the controller plugged in for a good half-an-hour now. STILL NOTHING!!!!

Either send me instructions on how to fix this [Mod Removed-Inappropriate] thing, or I WANT A NEW CONTROLLER, MICROSOFT, SINCE IT WAS YOUR [Mod Removed-Inappropriate] SOFTWARE THAT DESTROYED MY CONTROLLER!!!

    :)

Xbox elite 2 controller bricked after update

I was having the same exact problem. Xbox Accessories it told me that I needed to update. When I clicked update, the process failed, and the controller no longer functioned.

Your suggestion to use the Xbox Accessories seems a bit silly as it was using that app that bricked the controller in the first place.

I actually did manage to fix it though! Hopefully this helps people:

The problem seemed to be what USB port I was using. I have a USB hub, and with the controller connected to the hub, Xbox Accessories detected the controller, but attempting to do a firmware update bricked it.

I disabled bluetooth on the PC, unplugged the USB cord from the controller, turned the controller off

Then I plugged the USB (A) into a port directly on the back of my PC.

I plugged the USB (C) side into the controller, which turned it on.

(controller still bricked at this point)

I then opened Xbox Accessories app and did a firmware update.

This time the progress bar started moving, and the update was a success.

The controller is now working as intended.

Xbox Accessories on PC bricked my Xbox One controller and I don't have a access to a Xbox One console

I just had exactly the same issue

I finally installed Windows 10 and knew that this was a prerequisite for updating the xbox one controller firmware. Installed the "xbox Accessories" app and attempted to update the firmware.

The update stalled at 0% and waited 10 minutes and hit the back arrow. The xbox accessories app no longer sees my controller...... seems that the app bricked it.

Like the original poster I do not own an xbox one console

    Any solutions to this problem?

Elite Controller update erforderlich [Translation - Elite controller update required]

    Hi Helmut,

Thanks for keeping us updated with your reply. Since you have updated your PC to the latest Windows build, if you're having trouble

updating the Elite controller using the Xbox Accessories app
, then there may be an issue with the app itself if it isn't allowing you to update the controller. You may wish to run the App troubleshooter to see if there may be something with the app itself
that requires a "fix". Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store

In regard to configuring your Elite controller, you would need the Xbox Accessories app for that as well: Use the Xbox
Accessories app to configure your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller

If you continue to experience issues updating or configuring your Elite controller using your Windows 10 PC, then you may need to attempt to do so from a different PC or an Xbox One console.

I hope that this helps a bit more and please let us know the results.
