    So I've done this many times before, I've had 3 Xbox Ones (1 original, 1 S, 1 X) and 7 Xbox 360s (various models) all system linked on a 16 port switch with ethernet cables. In fact I just had this working a couple weeks ago. However, it is not working
    anymore, the Xbox Ones do not recognize each other or the 360s. the 360s recognize each other just fine but do not see the Xbox Ones. Was there an Xbox One update in the past couple weeks and that secretly disabled system link for Halo 3 (and other backwards
    compatible games?) on Xbox One? I've tried 2 different switches and even direct connected (1 ethernet cable into both Xbox ethernet ports) the Xbox Ones together and to Xbox 360s and they don't recognize each other. What is interesting is that if I unplug
    the power cord on my network switch the Xbox Ones do show up along with the 360s, they can all see each other! Nobody can connect because the switch isn't powered but they are seeing each other.

    Are you trying to system link between Xbox ones that are playing the Halo: Master Chief Collection and Xbox 360s that are playing the Xbox 360/Xbox Original versions of those games? I'm pretty sure that cross-play between Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of
    the games will not work. You can cross-play with the Xbox 360 version of the games on both consoles, for example, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4 are backwards compatible on Xbox one.

    You will either need all Xbox ones playing the Halo: Master Chief Collection or all Xbox 360s running the Xbox 360 Halo game of your choice.

    It appears that feature may only work with if played on Xbox 360 console.

    In theory you can connect a Xbox One S, Xbox One X and Xbox 360 consoles locally. However, the game you intend to play has to support local link play.

    However, for Xbox One games, I know of no game that supports local link play.

    On the Xbox 360, there are several games that allow local network play, and if the Xbox 360 game is backwards compatible, you can also play that Xbox 360 version of the game on your Xbox One.

    However, be aware that you can NOT play the Xbox One version of a game with the Xbox 360 Version of the game. So for example, you can NOT play FIFA 14 on the Xbox One together with a person playing FIFA 14 on the Xbox 360.

    You can however play Halo 3 as a backwards compatible Xbox 360 title on the Xbox One together with someone on a Xbox 360.

    MULTIPLAYER Xbox ONE vs. Xbox360

    As Smwutches already said, Xbox One versions of games can't play Multiplayer with Xbox 360 versions of the game.

    However, since the Xbox One is gradually getting Xbox 360 backwards compatible titles, some original Xbox 360 games can run on the Xbox One, and then the Xbox 360 and the emulated Xbox 360 games on the One can play together.

    FIFA 16 and 17 are NOT backwards compatible games, so they don't work across Xbox One and Xbox 360.

    Forza 5 and 6 don't exist on the Xbox 360. Forza 5 and 6 doesn't work with the Xbox 360 Forzas 2, 3 and 4.

    Later this year, the Xbox 360 Halo games will be made backwards compatible (there has not been a set release date yet). But currently HALO: REACH works on the Xbox One already, so your sons could at least play HALO: REACH with each other.

    And as Smileskybird said, in the (not too distant) future, Minecraft should allow cross platform multiplayer. But currently it's not possible.

    So to sum it up: Check this list here for games that your kids can play together on the Xbox 360, and the Xbox One through backwards compatibility:
