Xbox Newb Help ! Do i need a "Pass" for an Xbox one?

Hi, I am buying an Xbox One for my kids for Christmas .

The last games console i had was a PS2 . You bought the game, stuck it in , and that was it.

Now there seems to be all this online stuff and i'm very confused and need help!

So here is what i'm trying to understand. My kids are 10 and 8, they play Minecraft and Roblox mainly. Currently they play with their friend online via their tablets.

1. To do this on the Xbox One, can can they just play online with their friends ( like with the Tablets)?

Or do i need to buy some "online" Pass for them to download the games and play with their friends on line?

2. in addition to Minecraft and Roblox, i'd like to be able to play Batman (ark) , Elite Dangerous , Street Fighter. Should i buy the disks, or would it be better to subscribe to a Pass?

3. What is A Gold Pass / Ultimate Pass ( ive tried reading up but am not much the wiser)?

With this ultimate pass, it seems to cost about £130 for a year, you can play online and get access to various games . I had a look at the games, they are mainly all for adult / older gamers . Considering mine at 10 and 8, would doing this be a waste?

4. And if subscribe to a Ultimate Pass, but i find i want a games that are not on it what then?

5. With the Gold pass, i could not understand what that was ?

6. James tells me his friend plays a call of duty game online , and if we had and Xbox, James could join him. What would i need for that?

1. They can play online, but they will need a Gold subscription in order to do so.

2. That's really up to you. If you want to fully own the games, you'll want to buy them on disc or digitally from the Xbox store. If they're on Game Pass, you can play them and a bunch of other games, but only while you have the Game Pass subscription and
only while they are on Game Pass.

3/5. A Gold subscription is what allows you to play online and gives you discounts and free games with Games with Gold (4 games each month).

Game Pass is like a Netflix subscription for games. You can access hundreds of games while they are part of the subscription and while you have the subscription.

Game Pass Ultimate is a bundled subscription of Gold, Game Pass for console, and Game Pass for PC. You get all of the benefits of everything without having to purchase individual subscriptions.

You can browse the list of games included with Game Pass here and decide if that is worth it or if you just need a Gold subscription. If you don't
think you and/or the kids would play a lot of the games included, then you would only need Gold so they can play online.

4. Then you would buy the games either on disc or digitally through the Xbox store.

6. You would need the Call of Duty game and a Gold subscription.
