Xbox making ticking noises

Yes, according to information obtained from the Microsoft community forum it seems that this sound is caused by the fan since it is common in new generation consoles for this to happen, but if it happens frequently what I can recommend is that you send your console to fix. Regarding the green screen, check if the HDMI cable is connected correctly and verify the screen configurations. If everything is fine, I would recommend restoring your console while keeping your games and applications. This process will not delete any data, it will only restore any corrupt files that are on the system.

1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
2. Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console information > Reset console.
3. Select Reset and keep my games and apps. This will reset the operating system and remove all potentially corrupted data without deleting your games or apps.

That really quiet ticking noise that you can't hear unless you stick your ear on the console? That's not the HDD. HDDs don't make a ticking noise like that.

is the console making any unusual noise like a ticking sound?

It does not matter where the HD is from All mechanical (Non SSD) HDs will start making clicking noises when they are starting to go bad.

Your best bet would probably be to try and setup a repair order.

Now it's making a strange whirring noise as well as ticking like a cricket.
