Xbox Live won't let me change Gamertag for free the first time I change gamertag

Keep in mind the free change is only given if you were given a randomly generated tag when you created your account and are changing that tag for the first time. If you're already using a gamertag you chose, you will have to pay to change it.

You should be able to change it free the first time if you are still using the Gamertag that was provided when you first created the account. If you have customized that in any way it won't allow you to change it for free and will charge you the $9.99.
