Xbox Live Gold

My gold membership is up for auto renewal but I don't want the money being taken from my account and have decided to buy a pre-paid gold card.

Can I just add this directly to my account and therefore my debit card won't get charged or do I have to cancel my account first?

You will need to cancel the auto renewal first by selecting My Account at the top left of this page then Subscriptions and then turning off Auto Renewal otherwise you will be charged for it anyway.

If you have trouble turning it off you can contact phone support to have them turn it off for you.

After that you can add your Gold prepaid card with no worries.

 

onyx62is, if he redeems a code then it will not renew on the renewal date he was originally given if he's already Gold...

 

Indeed, token stacking works on a recent-first basis. The most recent membership you purchase or redeem is what is consumed first. If you have 3 weeks remaining on a 12-Month membership, and you redeem a 3-Month prepaid card, then after 3 months, those
remaining 3 weeks kick back in and it's business as usual. Peculiarly, if you have a 1-Month membership set to auto-renew, and you redeem a prepaid code, it will turn off automatic renewal. In other cases, if you had a renewing membership, but you turned
off auto-renewal, and you then redeem a prepaid card, this can turn your auto-renewal back on, as the prepaid card tells the system that you're not interested in canceling afterall. Therefore, it's always a good idea to go to Xbox.com/account after you've
set up your Gold, to make sure that the automatic renewal is in the state in which you desire it to be, on or off.

 

I have seen others post that they were charged after adding a prepaid card. If the OP wants to follow your advice then it's his decision. However, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

 

Usually, when a charge comes through after adding a prepaid card, it's because the renewal already happened, and there was already a payment pending. Auto-renewal only charges on the billing date for the account, which is not necessarily the same as the
renewal date. If the renewal has already happened, but it hasn't billed you for it yet, turning off auto-renew won't stop that payment. It will simply prevent another cycle from happening next time.

 

Thanks heaps.. You were both kinda right.. I had to turn off auto-renewal but if I add a pre-paid card before the renewal date then it automatically gets turned back on. I can add the card the next day after the renewal was due and all will be fine.
