Are you sure were picking the account balance as your payment option and not a credit/debit card?

You can look at your order history at account.microsoft.com and it will tell you what payment option was being used to purchase those items.

Microsoft have never allowed microsoft account currency to be used for xbox live gold membership purchases, You would need to buy an xbox live gold branded prepaid code card not a currency card.
