Xbox Gamer Account

Right. Simple question but lots of background...

I had an Xbox one years ago. I set up an account with the gamer tag Bugarson

I moved to a ps4 and that account fell to the wayside - I don't know the email or password anymore.

I have just bought a Series X and have set up a new account with the gamer tag Bugarsun (as I assumed Bugarson had been deleted)

But the Bugarson account does still exist. I have found it on search. But the app doesn't let me sign in with any email address to access it. How can I transfer the historic achievements from Bugarson to Bugarsun (and then delete the old Bugarson so the gamertag becomes free again)?

The xbox feature is part of your Microsoft account. Not all accounts have a gamer tag, but all xbox accounts are part of the Microsoft account. The gamer tag which is not a required feature of the Microsoft account is so that gamers can represent themselves
in a public manner to other gamers without revealing their actual account (which is the account email).

The gamer tag is not part of Microsoft security in any form, it may help you recover a lost account but just having a gamer tag will not give you access to or is part of the security for a Microsoft account. I did Xbox support for three years, I helped
recover many accounts while customer support was able to do that. I have never heard of a secondary gamer tag before. The only way to recover the account now is through the compromised account link listed above.

Thanks. It is definitely more than two years old. But if it was shut down and deleted why does it still come up on a search?

you can't transfer anything, the terms of accounts if it is not used for a period of 2years then will be closed, if the account gets shut down then the gamertag may become available in the future or may not.

I apologize but there is no option to transfer game achievements from one Xbox profile to another. The best way will be to recover your old account, Rob.

Please try signing in to https://account.xbox.com/profile using all Microsoft accounts that you own until we found the Microsoft account. I also have here a helpful link where you can check the methods for finding the correct Microsoft account:

This may only mean that it's linked to a different Microsoft account because an Xbox profile can only be linked to one Microsoft account.
