Depending on how "almost" the subscription was over, Microsoft already reserved a payment before the subscription is over, since payments take several days. So if they were to book the payment on the day the subscription ends, and your credit card expired,
or some other reason prevents the payment from going through, you could benefit from a few days of subscription despite not having paid for it.

To prevent such things happening, cancel your automatic renewal as early as possible (several days before the subscription ends).

By choosing not to renew, you will KEEP your currently paid subscription time, even if you stopped the automatic renewal.

Only if you choose to "cancel now" instead of "turn off auto renew", you will immediately stop the subscription, and if applicable get a refund for the unused full months remaining.

So if you plan on ending a subscription because you don't want or can't pay the next renewal period, simply turn off auto renewal as soon as possible.

Either pay the past due amount, or try to get a hold of the official support at

Be aware however, that due to the Covid-19 virus, the support is currently understaffed, so not all support options to get a real human are available.

Your best option is to choose the "Subscription and Billing" category, and try several options in that category, and see if you get the option to chat with support, or have them call you back. You might have to try different options.

Always remember to TURN OFF auto renewal if you aren't sure that you want the sub to continue, or are not sure you will have the funds at the time to avoid these issues
