xbox game pass pc general settings error and inability to install anything via xbox app.

Hi Tomm,

I changed the storage location from C(windows installation) to D. Don't think it did anything. I restarted the system afterwards but it didn't do anything.

I have enough space in each of the drives. C has about 300GB and D has about 1,5TB.

Is this path maybe correct?: C:\Users\[MyName]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.GamingApp_8wekyb3d8bbwe

I tried your operation under this folder with "LocalState" and "AC" folders.
Both times it seems to have worked at first. The General page can also be opened again in the settings. But then the game that I want to download takes an infinite amount of time for "Preparing". So I restarted the XboxApp, but then I end up with the old problem again.
Am I using the wrong folders? I'm not familiar with this at all and would really appreciate your help.

Hi,

I had the exact same issues and found no straightforward answer so I tried practically everything for a few days. I managed to get it working again after numerous tests, however, so I will post my solution for a fix for Windows 11 in case it actually fixes your problems as well.

It is important to follow all of the steps in order to actually make it work.

1. Make sure the Xbox app is installed and DO NOT remove it.

2. Delete Gaming Services

This is the first step, you have to open the MS PowerShell as Administrator and paste this simple command:

get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-Appxpackage –allusers

It might take some time but make sure the command executes without errors.

3. Find your old/current folder where the games were being installed. Inside the folder there will be subfolders with old data and unfinished download progress. This is basically the download queue in the app. You want to wipe it completely, but it is harder than it sounds because it requires more permissions. I added a small bat executable with a few lines to change the permissions for the folder so I can delete it. You should be able to run it from any location since you specify the full path to the directory, so you can create it in the desktop if you want.

To create it, open notepad and paste this:

SET DIRECTORY_NAME="C:\Locked Directory"
TAKEOWN /f %DIRECTORY_NAME% /r /d y
ICACLS %DIRECTORY_NAME% /grant administrators:F /t
ICACLS %DIRECTORY_NAME% /reset /T
RD %DIRECTORY_NAME% /S /Q
PAUSE

The bolded part should be replaced by the full path of your folder. You can get it easily by Right clicking on it while holding SHIFT -> copy as path; Windows 11 has this option by simply right clicking. Then save the file as delete.bat (name it whatever, has to be .bat extension), so in notepad save as -> delete.bat. DO NOT run it yet.

4. Restart the PC in order to kill all processes that are using/accessing the folder with the downloaded game data.

5. Run the delete.bat executable as Administrator, it should open the command prompt and pause after it's done. There should be no errors but if there is one, it will likely say that the process can't be completed because a another process is using the file/s. You will have to find what process is using it and end it before executing again.

6. Make sure the folder is gone.

7. Open the Xbox app and the Microsoft Store. It should prompt to install the Gaming Services and now you should do it. You can check if it is stuck on pending in the Library of the Microsoft Store but in theory it should download -> install now.

8. Check if the download queue is clean and now you should be able to recreate the folder and set it in the settings.

I really hope that helps because I had a bad time figuring it out and there is no support on the issue.

Those updates are important because some games have also new updates releases and for the game to run smoothly, the app must be updated too. To make sure that all available updates are installed for Gaming services app, follow the steps below.

• Get Updates from Microsoft Store
  
  • Open Microsoft Store
    
  • at the bottom left you will find the Library option, click on Library
    
  • in the upper right corner you will see the "Download updates" option, click on it
    
  • after installing all the updates, restart your computer and launch the game again.
    

Additionally, to install EA Play games from the Xbox app, make sure your Xbox and EA accounts are correctly linked. You may skip these steps if you have linked your account correctly.

• Go to https://help.ea.com.
  
• Select Log In.
  
• Choose the option to sign in using your Xbox credentials, and then sign in with the Xbox account credentials you want to check.
