    Xbox External Hard Drive not Functioning Properly


    I bought an external hard drive for our Xbox, but the games are not loading correctly when we have it plugged in. I have had this drive for over 4 years, and has worked perfectly fine until a couple months ago. I was moving our entertainment stand that holds
    the Xbox, and everything was working fine before then. After I had moved it, the storage drive no longer worked correctly. Now when it is plugged in none of our games load (even the ones saved on local storage) and it just reveals the "Sorry, this game took
    too long to start code" and forces us to close it. Even when we try and go to the "Manage Devices" section of the "My Games and Apps", nothing comes up and the loading icon remains spinning on the screen. There was one occasion when I had just power cycled
    the Xbox and tried the last USB port that the storage drive was correctly read, and even queued some updates for the games on the drive, but as soon as I tried to load into a game it went back to what it had been doing before. Another part of the problem is
    that sometimes we will get the notification/alert that the "External storage drive is ready", but even on those occasions, I have not noticed a difference in the hard drive's performance. We have tried power cycling, changing the USB port, buying a new cable,
    and some other methods that have not worked to our benefit. If at all possible to preserve the drive, that would be most preferred.

    Unfortunately, I do not own an extra external hard drive to try. If it is some sort of a hard drive error and the XB1 will function properly with an external that would likely be my best bet. I'll have to see if I can borrow one from a friend to determine

    some games wont play.

    This is because the xbox will only handle the official 250 gb hard drive for the games. You can use external storage as storage only (up to 16 gb) and that will be considered as flash memory.

    If you do not have the official ms hard drive your games will not function properly and you will not have access to their full capabilities.

    Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear that the issue is persistent on the External Hard Drive.

    Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a PC?

    Does the PC recognize the external hard drive?

    Does the external hard drive meet the specifications for the Xbox One?

    If the problem persists, I recommend to try a different external hard drive on the Xbox if possible. One thing we want to make sure, Are the ports on the Xbox One functioning?

    Some games out there require the xbox hard drive in order to work properly. Why not just buy the hard drive for it instead of something external.

    Unfortunately, yes. Some games require a hard drive in order to function properly because of the system files on the hard drive.
