Xbox direct delivery digital copy discussion

I just wanted to share my opinion as a collector of physical copy games in regards to limited edition consoles that include “direct delivery” digital copies.

I know the fan base is split evenly in regards to owning a game physically or digitally. So no one camp will be satisfied one way or the other if the game is included with the console.

I think the best solution would be to not include a game at all with the console or perhaps a voucher to be redeemed via Xbox to receive either a physical or digital copy, although I believe that would be harder to implement compared to leaving the game purchase up to the consumer altogether.

I’ve always liked collecting physical games, especially steelbooks. I get them for every major release.

I was lucky enough to get a Limited Edition Halo Infinite Xbox Series X. Thanks to Direct Delivery (which I admit, is fantastic for the digital crowd), the game is connected directly to my Xbox account. So if I want to own a physical copy and the glorious steelbook, I have to buy the game twice, once digital (via direct delivery) and once physical. A game already available through my gamepass subscription. I hope my frustration is understood.

Previously, before direct delivery, if I didn’t want the digital copy I could usually trade the code evenly for a physical copy, wasn’t ideal but it was better than buying a game twice on a platform that heavily advocates only having to buy a game once to play on any platform in the ecosystem.

Not a complaint, just my general feedback. I love the direction Xbox is headed.
