Xbox controllers stopped connecting wirelessly

I have 4 wireless Xbox controllers all purchased at the same time. They've been working as intended for about two years, then all stopped connecting wirelessly at the same time.

I can't connect them using the Xbox button or even using the sync button. In order to get them to work, I have to plug them in with a USB, go into the controller settings and hit the update button. There is no update available, but for some reason making it try to update anyway works so that when I unplug it afterwards it connects wirelessly. But I have to do this every time the controller powers off, for every controller.

I have tried: using the sync buttons on the back of the controller and the front of the console, updating the controllers, updating the console, restarting the console, turning off and unplugging the console and holding the Xbox button on the console to force a power cycle, doing the same with the controllers, connecting the controllers by USB and unplugging them without doing the fake update, and using different batteries. None of these things helped.

Hoping someone else has had this issue and resolved it, but couldn't find quite the same issue by searching.

Hello Andrew, sorry to hear you're having trouble with your controllers.

Apologies that you seem to have gotten disconnected from the previous againt. One of the first things we need to figure out here is where the problem actually lies. Are you able to try connecting the controllers to a different console to see if there's any issue there? If not then the problem would be with the console's wireless connection

Thanks for the response. I don't get the option to revert the firmware when following the instructions you linked.

When I go to the "My Xbox controller has connection issues after the last update" page there are two subheadings.

Under "Revert your controller's firmware through an Xbox console" it literally just lists the same instructions you linked, which brings me back to the same page. There is no "check controller firmware" option like it describes.

Under "Revert your controller's firmware through a Windows device" there is a link to "check your controller's firmware" but when I select it, it opens the Xbox accessories app and an error message that says "Something went wrong. Your controller is already up to date." Closing that message takes me back to the usual Xbox accessories page which does not include an option for firmware reversion.

Hello Andrew, I see that you have already tried some procedures on the console that we were going to suggest, however Microsoft has a firmware reversal procedure for situations like this.

You have no way to connect your controller wirelessly? You can also take a simple USB cable, connect controller to console. The controller is then also wirelessly connected to the console. You can then remove the cable. Hope that helps.
