Xbox controller (Model 1914) randomly disconnecting from Windows 10 PC over Bluetooth

I don't have a Xbox One console. I am planning to buy just the controller for my PC. The latest model comes with bluetooth, the older model doesn't. It is certified to work with Windows 10.

As Geth mentioned, Bluetooth connection to a Windows 10 device will work just fine for Xbox One controllers, depending on the model of the controller. Certain older Xbox One controllers do not support Bluetooth connections.

Yes, that update is a requirement.

Please see this link for steps and that the update is required to connect a Xbox One controller to the Windows 10 PC.

It shows how to connect by wire, wireless adapter and via bluetooth.

Side note: Not all Xbox One controllers support bluetooth, the first (older) models do not, see the second link on how to determine if you have a controller that supports it or not.

Ok so the Xbox one controller is fully updated and Bluetooth works for a bit but then disconnects. It would seem that some other program might be trying to take over the Xbox controller from the windows Bluetooth program. Any ideas what this program could
be?

Bluetooth

Xbox One Wireless Controllers may support connecting to your PC via Bluetooth. Your controller has this feature if it looks like the one on bottom in this illustration:

On Bluetooth-supported controllers, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the face of the controller. On controllers without Bluetooth, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the top, where the
bumpers are.

• Bluetooth requires a PC running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. See Windows Update: FAQ to learn how to get the latest Windows update.
• For best performance, update your controller. See How to update your Xbox One Controller on Windows 10.
• Bluetooth is supported on PCs, tablets, and laptops. It is not supported on mobile devices.
• Bluetooth does not support any attachments, such as headsets, chatpads, or the Xbox Stereo Adapter.
• We recommend connecting only one controller at a time using Bluetooth.

Follow these steps to pair your controller to your PC using Bluetooth:

3. Turn on your Xbox Wireless Controller by pressing the Xbox button.
4. Press the controller Connect button for three seconds and release.
5. On your PC, select Start, then Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
6. Turn on Bluetooth so your PC can discover Bluetooth devices.
   
   1. Select Xbox Wireless Controller > Pair.
