Xbox controller keeps disconnecting when connected by wire.

The controller does not connect wired or wireless. I had taken the controller with me into the kitchen and that’s when it disconnected and it will no longer connect so unable to update.

It also seems that the controller stays connected only when I'm holding the USB wire at a certain angle (pressing down on it). Once I let go of the wire, it disconnects.

The only thing connected is a External Harddrive and I've tried it with and without it and it'll still disconnect. I also can confirm now that the controller will disconnect even when wired in to the console.

2. The controller keeps disconnecting.

I think this is more of a problem with the controller than the console, because this happens only when the controller disconnects from the game midway. Sometimes, I get lucky and see a "Connect a controller" error popup, but most times the console arbitrarily
shuts off with the XBox light on both the console and the controller blinking. This happens irrespective of battery levels in the controller. Does not happen at all if I connect it with a wire to the console. I am yet to try a different controller though.

I tried multiple different controllers over the weekend. The problem persists. My controller worked alright with other Xboxes. Clearly, this is not a controller issue.

Sorry to hear that your gaming is being interrupted by controller disconnects. Have you checked out the article outlining
Xbox One Controller disconnects? Additionally, are you able to wire your controller directly? If the controller is updated and doesn't stay connected
when you use the USB cable, your controller may need to be replaced.
