Xbox Connectivity Issue

I’ve had my Xbox One X for about 6 years and my current controller for 3. I just got home from college for the summer and have been using both for about a week and everything has been fine. When I started it up the controller didn’t turn on as it normally does (that’s how I turn on my Xbox), instead the Xbox button began flashing so I had to press the button on the console to start it up. I went to pair it, it paired first try and I had no issues using it. Fast forward a few hours and I had to leave the game, I come back and the same issue except this time it takes about 6-7 tries before the controller pairs to the Xbox. I then realize I should probably update, go to try and update and my system tells me the controller can’t update at the moment. I get the controller to reconnect a couple more times (with difficulty) to try and update but it won’t update. I plug the controller into the system via USB-C but it isn’t paired so every time I try and pair it’ll flash, vibrate and turn itself off. I don’t know what to do at this point, the controller the game came with is packed away at school because I had to fly back and was conserving as much space as possible. I also don’t want to buy another controller, if anyone could help that would be great! Thank you
