Hi there! This is Virginia O.

I understand that you are experiencing issues with your internet connection.

I apologize for the inconvenienced this has caused you. I will do my best to help you.

If your Xbox consistently loses internet connection upon startup and requires a router restart every time, it likely indicates a problem with your router's settings, potentially related to a faulty lease time on your Xbox's IP address, a weak signal, or even a problem with the router itself.

Here are the troubleshooting to perform:

Please hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for at least 10 seconds to turn it off completely. Unplug the power cord, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in and turn the console on.

And then unplug your router from the power source, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in and wait for it to fully restart.

Kindly make sure that all network cables are securely connected. If you're using a wired connection, try using a different Ethernet cable or port on your router.

Next is set a manual DNS, please go to settings> network> network settings> Advanced settings>DNS Settings> Manual.

    PRIMARY DNS: 8.8.8.8

    SECONDARY DNS: 8.8.4.4

Then go to Settings > Network > Network settings > Test network connection. This can help identify any issues with your network setup.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

I thought you were saying that you had a DIR 655 and having trouble....

As far as the WRT54g, it is a good router but not great for gaming these days. If you feel like tinkering much then you may be able to put an aftermarket firmware on it to get it to perform a little better, but there is only so much the aging hardware will
be able to do. A quick search for "aftermarket firmware wrt54g" will point you in the right direction. If you move to any router that is 802.11n then you will have the performance you are looking for.

I haven't used many routers but my trusty Linksys hasn't been causing me trouble since it was purchased *which was many years ago*. My brother has a pair of TurtleBeach headsets and the router hasn't caused him any
    issues.

    Routers

If yoi remove the vpn you will gain a significant speedboost

Running any proxy slows you down

Any mesh or ac routers should.have self healing which allows devices to be switched and managed on the network by the chips in the router
